The weather closes in on my plans but I manage to dodge. A warning for all growers regarding caterpillars on sprouts and other brassicas. The frost is required to kill off remaining pests. Purple sprouting broccoli is thriving. The benefits of compost layering.Rose hips and flowers on the same plant in November. The raised beds get finished in the wet soil. The compost bins need to be flat so that I don’t get too much run off down the slope. A fair amount of soil needs to be removed but Ive got just the place for it. Well the hens have gone which opens up a lot more tasks for the plot.I get drawn into a bit more compost area work. There is still time to plant garlic too.

UK Allotments are the ideal place to learn how to grow fruit and vegetables. My allotment is a no dig allotment and I share how to grow vegetables and how to prepare a no dig garden. If you are growing in a backyard garden or homestead and you want some tips on how to grow vegetables I hope my channel has something to offer. Allotment ideas are always worth sharing and I am happy to share my gardening ideas and failures so that we can all learn to grow vegetables together. I also learn on the allotment nearly every time I am there and learning how to grow in a Polytunnel or greenhouse can be a fun an exciting experience too. 1. Wet isn't it Malc, same here in the Midlands buddy, its been like the end of days, nice to see you working away mate, and yes the pests are enjoying the mild weather too

  2. I use Grazers G3 on my brassicas. The caterpillars taste a leaf, hate it, and crawl away to the next plot! Only need to spray one side of the leaves so easy to apply.

  3. I have maybe 12 inches of soil before hitting clay so have raised beds was necessary for better drainage.

  4. Oh Malcolm, well I'm not the only one then? I collected some kale for tea from the garden – and there they were, the green wiggly demons! These caterpillars though were the bright green solid colour. We haven't had a frost yet. I've heard the winter isn't going to be that cold, but I hope we have enough to kill off a few things. Great jobs jobbed there. All the best!

  5. Great job Malc , looking great and so pleased the hens are not to far away lol , can't believe your Brussels as I thought they would be safe as its November, anyway keep up the good work Malc

  6. Howdy Malc! Indeed, you are having good times. 👍It looks like those compost bays were meant to be there…everything falling right into place.😃
Sweet to see y'all's feather babies have a good home nearby.
Another good thing I'm picking up from you is to use screws to put borders, etc together so they can be taken apart easily! That's working smart! Thanks!😃
We are still a month away from our average first frost date.

  7. You work so hard and do everything really well it must teach a lot of people watching. I sorry about your sprouts I hope they recover👍

  8. Hi Malcolm, always enjoy seeing your progress around the plot. The new composting area is starting to look really sharp! You may want to reassess how you planted your elephant garlic though. In order to get the best from each clove, it should be given a foot square of space and 8-12” deep. Glad you found a good home for the rest of your hens. Keep up the good work!

  9. It's great to see the hens have a new home not to far away from u. Compost bins looking good those raised beds look great. It's coming along nicely now. The compost from your bins looked like some great compost

  10. It's all looking good Malc, you work like a Trojan but don't over do it.
    Keep safe

  11. Hello Malcom, really impressed by how the downsizing is coming together. I am glad your three ladies have found a new home and not too far away. I am quite jealous of the new bed with a cold frame in is a great idea, makes it very versatile going forward. I have found those bright green caterpillars too, on my beans as I was taking them down. I net my brassicas to deter pigeons and the local cats, but that has helped keep the butterflies off the brassicas. I planted my garlic about 3 or 4 weeks ago now and they have sprouted about 4 inches now. Romping away as we have been having temps of 19/20C here in Surrey. Very unseasonable! Feeling cooler this week, had to double jumper yesterday in my garden while getting the onions sets into the ground between showers. Been hammering down most of the morning here today so the shallots are going out today. Ah well I will hope for a dry spell at the weekend maybe as back to the office job tomorrow. Have a good rest of the week. 😊👍

  12. 👷‍♂️I love a good build project and you feature lots of them on your 📺 show! 👏 Will we see the hen house being demolished if it’s your plot neighbour doing the work?

  13. I know we mentioned this last time but once the beans all grow in will you still have room to move along that side of the boxes? I would suggest (I know you spoke of it) removing the wood along the “path” you may find yourself tripping on it. That clay is why I grow in raised beds 😂😂 I could make pots. Wouldn’t you want a hole in the barrel so it doesn’t get overly wet in rain? And not sure if you have one but a really long handled shovel would be less strain on your back (my back hurt just watching you shoveling). Glad the girls found a new home 🐓🐓. Have a great week don’t overdo it 🐝 safe

  14. Yes I seen one today while I was at my allotment butterfly 🦋 my brussel have done really well but had them covered all year

  15. We have had a huge amount of rain lately but like you I have been replacing the grass paths with wood chip and have really seen the benefit of a less muddy plot while I'm redesigning and changing everything around.

  16. Evening Malc, such a lot of things to do to rationalise the plot. Do you have a deadline for handing it over? Best wishes.

  17. Hi Malc, I enjoyed the new music🎶. It looks like you have a lot of work still to do for downsizing, but so good to hear the hens have got a new home to go to.
