Gardening Tips: Starting Onions from Seedlings

There are 3 methods for planting onions: Seeds, Sets or Seedlings. Choosing to plant your onions in your garden this year using onion seedlings will give you the best crop by far! You can either grow your own onion seedlings under lights or buy them from a grower online. But either way you will be much happier with the results if you fill your garden with onion seedlings! This video shows you how to plant your onions seedlings.

This video comes to you from Rick Stone and the blog Stoney Acres. It is part of our ongoing gardening video series called “Grow What you Eat, Eat what you Grow”!

  1. Great information Rick! It just made me chuckle a bit when you were talking about a cold climate while planting seedlings in March. March is winter in real cold climate. I just seeded my onion seedlings indoors last week, they have plenty of time to grow till our garden is not solid frozen and covered in snow anymore. Enjoy your garden and keep up the good work.

  2. What about watering them? I noticed in your “shovel” cleaning tips, that you have a clay soil. How do you fight that within the cold frame? Potatoes need (I thought) very good drainage, and adequate water.

Also, I’ve been recently relegated to an apartment with a balcony, in Virginia. Could I use a mini-cold frame on it, if I insulated under it all? I’ve gardened all my life, but now am “older than dirt” 😉 , but the balcony (southern exposure) gives me hope. Also, what spices does your wife use for her cream sauce? I was always taught that “you can’t cook it until you grow it”, so of course, I wart her “recipe”. We used to do creamed peas with “armored heifer” (condensed milk), with a garlic salt, butter, flour roux that has been lifelong favorite! Using home grown peas, of course! Now I want to try the home grown potatoes with it! Thanks for posting your videos!!! Blessings!!!

  3. I just found you while I was trying to find someone in my zone. I like how short and to the point your video’s are.

  4. Awesome video! Im just starting to garden. Can you send me the link of where you get your onions, Thank you in advance

  5. The nursery called the the same day their shipment arrived and I purchased same day, planted same day! They are thriving!

  6. Or just buy them direct from the company you are talking about!!! Dixondale Farms 🤷🏻‍♂️ pre order and you’ll have them fresh 😎
