At the end of a long day on Thursday 3rd November, we pretty much finished marking up the Walled Garden in Scotland, a 2 acre wildlife and food forest project.
I use short bamboo canes and baker’s twine string to mark out features and a marked 2 metre length of bamboo to quickly calculate distances. Because it’s hard to transcribe the curves from the plan to the ground with a measuring tape, so I walked the paths a few times to get a feel for them, then used a strimmer to mark the path, then a mower for the final cut of the path.
For the trees we used longer bamboo canes with a name label printed out. As there’s a couple of hundred plants, this took quite a long time!
The next stage is planting the windbreak hedges and canopy layer. I will do a livestream event, detailing the thinking behind the project, the wildlife features, and the range of species. It’s a big, long-term project that will take a quite few years to come to fruition.

What an exciting, not to mention HUGE project!
Looking forward to seeing how it develops! 🤗🌳🦋
😇 Wow, brilliant to see the level of documentation – so much learning will be possible about successes and failures – great work!
