I started planting a fruit tree orchard in early 2020 of 20+ trees, and I have numerous fruit trees and shrubs in pots, still to be planted, plus I keep sneaking in a couple each year. Harvested for the first time this spring, and OMG, store bought just doesn't compare. Still want to garden but we're in the desert and summers are brutal, so this year I'm planning on growing in 2 greenstalks, to see if I can produce enough to support our basic needs for greens, carrots, etc. Right now, I don't think you can have too many fruiting plants!
What would you recommend someone grow as a beginner gardener? Was planning on doing a smaller raised bed, maybe even your 5 gal bucket idea! Tomatoes? Lettuce? Cucumbers? My mom says not to plant onions or potatoes because they occupy alot of soil?
I have two freezers filled with beans, squash, tomatoes, and peppers, plus canned items, cucumber salad, pickles, tomatoes, and jelly. My garden has largely transitioned to a fall/winter garden, in Alabama–zone 7B. I am growing a mix of rooting vegetables, and greens, Komatsuna, mizuna, tatsoi, Chijimisai, Late Nagasaki Cabbage, Hilton Cabbage, Baby Boc Choy, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, Russian Kale, Japanese Giant Red Mustard, Kohlrabi, radishes, turnips, carrots, and beets. In a week, I will be planting garlic. My garden consists of 36, expanding to 40 grow bags, five raised beds, and two GreenStalk Towers. I working on plans to add a 10×20 polytunnel, and maybe another 4×8 raised bed. I am also working on my spring planting plans. I've already decided on what plants I am planting, and have the seeds. I am in the process of fine tuning my plans, how many plants, how many square feet to each crop, and where it will be in my garden. All of my raised beds have hoops and are covered with netting (cat and deer protection). When it gets closer to winter, I will switch the netting out with greenhouse plastic.
I checked the house close to my daughter that used to have prickly pear cactus out front, it's GONE and replaced with flowers😔 I know one other place I need to check!
I'm on board and fully caring for my mini food forest. But my harvests so far are one fruit per tree or even none where the year before I had 12. Will keep at it. Zone 10b, plenty of sun and correctly amended soil, good watering. Just need to learn each tree further.
I’m starting a garden in east Sacramento county. Food forest plus hugelculture beds. So far planted myer lemon, satsuma mandarin, blackberries and raspberries. Much more to be planted by February
seedless tangerines are going off, avocado just starting to finish, okinawa sweet potatoes were harvested last week and immediately transplanted my winter crop into the ground in their place. Figs are still going after 2 months, japanese and american persimmons are about halfway through harvest. Only a dozen pomegranates left on the tree. hot chilies, eggplant, bell pepper continue to offer abundance in the garden this year.
Absolutely!! Food prices have been skyrocketing. We have been encouraging people to produce their own food. There is a sense of urgency now…. Be safe, everyone. Prep up. Be well.
Seriously Dan! I asked my mom to get me some canned saury from the Korean market (usually really affordable). Well she came back with only 3 cans because they used to be $1.19 a can. Now $5.99 a can! Holy tolito 😮 for “canned” fish! Crazy
Evil plan is to break us all. Car insurance bill came & went up 50%!! Air conditioning guy said units will go up 20% after new year. My fave shampoo is $80 at Ulta. & Pfizer increased their fave product by 10,000%
I just finished my first real growing season. It's pretty slim in the garden right now as I wait for my baby tree collards and Fall/Winter plants to grow. I have never done a Winter garden, and am collecting perennial veggies. I have learned so much from your channel. Happy Harvesting! And, VOTE!!
Thanks dan! I have a small 10 ft by 20 ft greenhouse I use in the winter time to grow collard greens and root vegetables. It brings me a lot of joy go in there and feel the warm temperatures when it’s freezing outside. Keep inspiring!
Avocadoes and citrus! 😀 My avos are just beginning to produce but citrus are always prolific producers and hang on the tree for many months ready to be harvested at will. Zone 9a just a ways North of you.
You’re absolutely doing God’s work. You got my attention with the pomegranates- best fruit ever. Now how can I start growing it myself? Please I welcome any advice- thank you!
I live on a tiny Mediterranean island and the prickly pear cactus 🌵 grows wild everywhere (literally it’s everywhere here!). And did you know you can eat the green cactus leaves/paddles (nopales) it’s the most nutritious plant you can eat. Cut out the spikes and blend it into a smoothie or marinade it and bake in the sun ☀️ like you might marinade ribs for example.
We have a large veggie garden and have been building our orchard for two years. Sunday I planted two varieties of Asian persimmons and a nectarine. We should have apples and pears this summer. What we cannot preserve we will gift to others or use for bartering. Winter in NE Texas is the BEST time for broccoli/cauliflower/cabbage. We are zone 8b. Our winter beds are doing phenomenal and I have so many collards. If you are considering a garden next spring start now. Don't have equipment? Do a double dig and cover with a silage tarp or even a used billboard tarp. You will need a little time to get it ready! Convert some of your flower beds to veggies. Kale, spinach, chard, and other cold hardy veggies do well in zones 7 and 8 and you might can find some starts. Look for organic garlic at the grocery store, separate the cloves and plant the biggest for garlic next June/July. Just do it!
I couldn't wait, inspired by one of your videos, I found some seeds for that cabbage tree you featured. I had no idea they even existed. Going to give those a try. Also added goji earlier this year after seeing some of your videos on those as well. God Bless!
I just pulled out my prickly pear cactus. It was different from your one (I am in New Zealand). It went yellow as someone planted it in a container. I know it was 5 years old. I think it was dying. It was a shame to see it go. It was very very prickly. I didn't realise that it is the fruit that you eat. I always thought it was the flat green "leaves".

Fresh produce has always been in demand. Seems we crave the vitamins.

Gardening and canning are both very rewarding.
Theyre 50c each here in Arizona. Very refreshing fruit
I'm looking forward to planting a fig tree in the spring.🤗

Today in Michigan a tiny head of iceberg lettuce was over $4!
Love your basket 💖 I have a paddle cactus in a pot I'm not sure if it will ever fruit or is a verity that produces fruit.

I totally agree with you, Dan. Thanks for the video. Happy gardening!

In zone 9 b so I can finally plant my patio veggie garden.

Do pomegranates grow in zone five which is southern Canada?

How can u find out if your cactus is edible
How do you fertilize pomegranates and guava? The trees were here, when we bought the house, and they aren't looking so good. I'm in 9b CA.

Please do a video on how to eat the prickly pear! Thanks, Dan.
