Container gardening has now become water efficient thanks to a fusion of two gardening methods I learnt about, wicker and hugelkultur. Wicker is used for container gardening where there is a water reserve in the bottom of the pot and uses osmosis to keep the soil moist and Hugelkultur is where wood is buried under a mound of dirt to help retain moisture and slowly break down helping to ffed the plants planted upon it. I have fused the two methods and now growing some flowers in a pot with this method on my front porch.

  1. I have one concern. by filling the bottom with water, the bottom would become anaerobic and not very good for plants. Or, does the wood soak it up creating air spaces between the wood pieces?
