There are many varieties of geranium plants, which bring beautiful green leaves and bright flowers to any garden. There are two major types though: the upright and ivy. The upright geranium grows to a bush, but it does not flow down or climb onto things. The ivy geranium would flow down off the ledges, flow from hanging containers, or climb up fences and trellises. Ivy geraniums can cover a good area of the ground and can be used for ground cover.
Today’s geranium is called, “Vancouver Centennial”. It is one of the most beautiful plants, due to its very colorful leaves and sweet, red flowers. Unlike regular geraniums, the Vancouver Centennial has brick red or bronze centers, which get more pronounced when the plant grows in the sunshine. The flowers are smaller, but are orange red and smell sweet, unlike the ones in regular geraniums. Vancouver Centennial is great for containers and can be placed around the garden, at balconies and patios, and in hanging baskets. As with any geranium, do not water too much, as it could rot the plant. I purchased my Vancouver Centennial from the Lowe’s and planted it in a one-gallon container. In Southern California, excessive heat stops proper growth of geranium plant, making it less attractive from mid-summer to fall. So, geraniums planted in containers can be moved around to half-shade areas conveniently! Thanks for visiting my garden today!
