We Grew These Sweet Potatoes WITH Tomatoes! | Companion Planting Sweet Potato Harvest 2022

This season we grew sweet potatoes in raised beds, and in this particular bed we decided to try companion planting the sweet potatoes with tomatoes.

Now, we know that our tomatoes produced very well this season, but the question became would tomatoes be a good companion plant for sweet potatoes.

Research on this point seems to vary. Some say that tomatoes are not good companions for sweet potatoes because they are prone to some of the same diseases. But, we still wanted to do this sweet potato experiment to see what our results would be.

We grew four different varieties of sweet potatoes in this bed: beauregard sweet potatoes, vardaman sweet potatoes, centennial sweet potatoes, and Georgia Jet sweet potatoes.

This sweet potato harvest 2022 shows us the results of this companion planting, and also helps us to know which sweet potatoes are the best producers for our zone 5 garden.

Thank you for watching this garden harvest video!

  1. I was excited right along with you on the sweet potatoes. I'm a relatively new gardener. I live in Southern California. Doing container gardening. I have 2 GreenStalk towers. One day I might do potatoes. Thanks for making my learning so much fun!

  2. Sweet potatoes for me must be sweet. But…… most versatile for me is potatoes. I am definitely choosing the side of "team potato "

  3. This was a very exciting harvest!
I think I'm with you on sweet potato being my most versatile vegetable.
For the harvesting, I LOVE that feeling of unearthing the gold!
As to the type of sweet potato, I prefer a sweet, non-stringy variety.
Thanks for the idea of labeling a rock. I've struggled with other means of identifying plant types!

  4. I like this video. I like my sweet potato orange colored and sweet. They should be ready to harvest in a few weeks. Central Florida. I also planted some purple ones from slips as well. Fun, fun, fun!

  5. What a nice harvest. I have a general gardening question. I have had such a rough time with squirrels. Any suggestions on how to keep them out of my garden? They have dug in every pot and bed and ate my beans.

  6. Wow I wouldnโ€™t have ever thought to grow those together. Iโ€™m going to try it next year!

  7. Just watched a video from hippie chick off grid she grows all her potatoes in sawdust! The biggest potatoes I've ever seen! I want to try it do you know of any downside to this?
