Oni, Thunder God’s Tale is fresh off Netflix and as you might expect, I absolutely HAD to do a cultural breakdown on it. Though, truth be told it hit me harder on an emotional level than I ever thought it would…

3:39 oh that is beautiful to see in the background, just all the nice cultural items from Japan then on the far left, the sea of grey plastic crack, making the greatest army yet
Hammer kitsune why
Towards the end, you were crying, I didn't see your face, but you can just tell, through your voice.
The second I saw this on Netflix I was so excited for your video I knew was coming
I have a surgestion for a video.
Naga agu. A lull of the sea. I have reason to believe its a humanist version of kappas. Considering they lose their ability to go back to to the sea and from what I've seen they loss their energy when they dry out, like when the kappa empty their head bowl. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. It's also I nice short anime to watch but it's deep. I'm only 18 episodes in out of 26 and even the dub has it betrayed beautifully. I can't go any further due to spoilers but it's an anime that deserves more recognition and the "sea children" is a very obvious connection to "river children" that kappa translates to.
Also. Its also on Netflix, at least over here where I am. I think I spelt it right but Japanese is not my strong suit
Are you going to do a culture video on Splatoon 3
Title: Oni or Kami?
Me: or perhaps Okami? ey? ey? see what i did there?
what? i thought it was clever and funny
Okay, just got done seeing this on Netflix. All I can say is, I haven't been this in my feels since the Ōkami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki anime …
Watching this series was amazing, I just wish I wasn't so sensitive. Maybe then I wouldn't have cried near the end.
Y'know, considering that Dice has been following you for some time now, I can't help but wonder if Calvin was inspired by you.
You didn't tell me there would be crying at the end GG. You magnificent basterd you undersold how good this series was. Won't spoil either but damn this was great XD
Warning; Spoiler Comment for the climax of the final episode.
While I was invested in the series from the beginning, as soon as I heard the word "Gaijin" in the series everything else I was thinking about instantly disappeared and I became 110% focused on the episode.
That scene didn't make me cry, but it definitely hit something in me that I think I can only describe as my soul.
Or though when all the young kami left the school to help Onari and Amaten said "No" I let out this little chuckle of pure happiness only to have to pause the video a few seconds later as I realized I was crying as once again it hit that spot in my soul.
I can't even say what it was that made that moment so powerful.
I tried thinking about it after the credits and I think I've come to this conclusion.
That scene should the Kami putting aside their fear and hatred to help out Onari, who to them was an outsider, a Gaijin.
I've never been to Japan, though I hope to one day go, but through Goombahs videos I've learnt so much more than I ever thought possible about Japan, it's history and it's traditions.
Even in this video Goombah talks about what it means to be a Gaijin and be seen as an outsider in Japan.
With the stigmatism of Gaijins in Japanese culture, that moment where all the Kami's put aside their preconceived notions about Oni's/Gaijin's/Humans and instead not only tried to help Onari but also put themselves in danger for her because regardless of whether she was Gaijin or not, she was their friend and one of them.
Which I can't even put into words how beautiful I think that is.
Also, while watching the series all I could think was "The way he moves, the way he acts, the way he looks. If Naridon spoke, Craig Robinson would be the perfect voice actor for that role" only to find out Craig was the one who voiced him.
One last comment, swear I'm done after this one.
Quick question for everyone.
At 11:22 you see Naridon's Drum with the symbols on it.
I've seen that logo on several things in different series over the years.
And for all that time I always looked at it as a solid circle with a 3 point curved shuriken on top of it. (Best way I can describe it in words)
It was only while watching the series and seeing Onari bang the drum at the start of episode 2 that I realized it was 3 Mitama's circling each other.
Anyone else see where I was coming from?
Or have I just made you see the logo in a completely different way?
Happy Halloween!
So that's why it's been months since there's been an upload on the other channel
Is it sad or funny that my first experience with oni came from a cartoon called Jackie Chan adventures. I want to say season 3 where Jackie and jade had to find oni masks that held the bad oni's powers and put them in a anti magic bubble or risk their powers being used. I will admit that season is kinda a blur to me so I might have forgotten a few things.
I know how you feel man, as an African American man who jumps for joy when I see anything that represents my heritage in a positive light I just get emotional myself because it means that I as a human being no longer feel invisible and that my culture exists and that's it's not just a bunch of harmful stereotypes, just like you I go wild when I see anything related to Mythology or Folklore especially when it's from my favorite countries like India, China, Japan, Iran, Nigeria, etc. I remember when I accidentally came across your channel a couple of years ago I saw your videos for the first time and was blown away by how passionate and knowledgeable you were about Japan and watching your videos taught me even a few things about the country even I didn't know about, but one thing is for sure your love and respect for Japan shines through every time I see a video of you talking about it and that is 100 percent facts, it's because of your channel I feel inspired to make my channel talking about the history and mythology of my native country of Nigeria 🇳🇬 and it because of your videos.
Oh, I watched the whole thing and it was awesome! I found it by chance and am so glad I did.
PS: I have still to see a tsukumogami. Don't know how accurate legends are because there's a lot of mysterious things still, but if it is true… In a 4-5 years I will see if an abject becomes one after existing for 100 years. Great-grandma's birth certificate is nearing a century since it's making. Maybe it only works in Japan?
I love how this went from "So this guy I know on Twitter made a movie on Netflix" and my mind was as distrustful as could be that this was a plug or something but then Gaijin gives you that emotional moment of "this was also me". Truly a wonderful film and lesson for all not to carry on the traditions of hatred and mistrust of something because it feels odd. I also love seeing Oni represented as more people than evil demons! You barely even get that in anime even to this day. Thank you for sharing this experience and making this video.
I have been waiting for you to get to this for a while.
But what about Akuma? Kami are said to be (subjectively) good aspects of nature, and Kami are said to be negative. I've always thought that Akuma were the evil aspects of nature and personally considered yokai to be the neutral part of that spectrum.
Sheesh, man. 😢 ….. Ya want a long-distance hug?
I get what it’s like to be viewed differently from what’s considered “the norm.” I got picked on quite a bit for my nerdy nature and my Asperger’s had a bit of role in it, too. Trust me when I say that I actually kinda get where you’re coming from. There may be differences, but the similarities are there.
How about Shikigamis? Can they be kamis? Since some onis became shikigamis, apparently
Well, I guess if I could equate any of our supernatural communities in Malaysia that's comparable to yokais or kamis would probably be the (jinns or Janns, which are somewhat related to the stereotypical genie in the way that they are mystically powerful). Though technically the term is considered an umbrella term of sorts, as whilst it is often associated with the malicious spirits or creatures, some are benign or at least indifferent towards humans. Mountains or jungles have their gods(either residing on one or is one, usually called dewa instead, equivalent to devas) as well as the mystical race called "orang bunian"(often translated as "elves", in which they almost basically are; youthful, long-living, magical and lives in their own temporally different realm).
Though since Shintoism is quite related to animism, i guess that's why in early translation for the word yokai in Malay is often "hantu"(lit. Ghosts) whilst the kamis as dewas.
These supernatural creatures are rarely legendary enough to be deified, though some just have better street cred to be counted as a deity(in a royal way like the mountain gods).
Certain ones like the weretiger, werecrocodile and nenek kebayan are rathe infamous to not be automatically be classified as ghosts, but magically powerful entities
2:35 did as you recommended. Just paused your video and looked up Oni on Netflix… How by all that is holy to the Kami did I not watch that series earlier? What a great show!
… Now back to Gaijin and little G 😁
