Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

G'day Everyone, I've been a little crook lately but coming good now. Thanks for all your support and well wishes! I mentioned Hoselink in the video – use this link to get 10% off Hoselink Garden Products https://l.linklyhq.com/l/5uZu it should apply the discount automatically on checkout. Cheers 🙂
Hey Mark, I'd love it if you'd do some seed starting videos, as we are in a similar area. I'm still trying to figure out when is the right time to plant stuff (I have found a few websites, but the success rate isn't there yet, and I grew up further south, with frosts, so it's a little different). Loved this video – it makes me realise that I'm a bit behind with the planting of some things (and then there are the other seed starting sessions that failed!). Oh, and I am a BIG fan of Dill too. 😋Cheers!
What you're growing each month would be great
Love you Mark! Just wanted to share a bit of a laugh, that the auto-captioning transcribed “self sufficient me” as “sausage fisherman!” LOL oh dear
It would be really great if you did a monthly planting/sewing video. A ‘this is what to sew this month’ video would help me heaps as a beginner. I live in the sub tropics and as I watched this video I saw that maybe following the seed packets has made me sew things like tomatoes and cucumbers too late. 🥴 a bit late for me to fix now! I’m a newbie though so I’m going to approach it as a great lesson for next year! Thank you for your videos my 12yr old daughter and I were inspired by you to start a vegetable garden and this week we are finally able to eat the food we have grown. It is so rewarding and beneficial to my mental health to be out side and enjoy the rewards of all our hard work. Thank you
I like the idea of month to month what ur growing!
Another top informative video. I have a question for you Mark. How do you protect your pumpkins when they are young.
I am finding that just after flowering , the next day the flower and veg has disappeared.
Hope you can shed some light on the matter 😅
Lol, the CC "I'm mark from sausage fisherman" what? 😆😆😆💖💖💖
Thanks mate , I live in Brissy and get a lot from your channel , easy to follow and from a fellow Aussie , how good is that !
Your season is the opposite of mine in the US plus you don't the cold I get. Interested in what you grow each month.
I love the idea of doing a group of vegetables every month. I don't know if you know how educational you are. I keep the videos on file and I go back to them often. It's like having a video library on plants. So please do a group of vegetables every month.
Yes, please do this every month! I loved this video. You can even make a list of everything and direct people to your site! ❤🌎🌱
🎉🎉🎉🎉
Mark, We enjoy all your videos. Do what ever your heart desires. Hello from Florida.
An every month video sounds great!
You are sooooo funny … Love all your videos ❤️
Great vid as always, crop planting per month is a super idea sounds like a lot of work though with all the gardening that you do, cheers matey!!
😊Thanks, beautiful dill weed! Love your fun!
Love these videos! It would be great to know what seeds you are germinating each month too – we live in a similar area and I am always behind on my seed starting!
HA! HA! HAPPY HALLOWEEN 🎃😄 Loved that. Sorry to hear that you were sick, but so glad to see that you are back with your terrific sense of humor. I have butternut squashes taking over the front yard like your pumpkins do in your garden. The honey bees are here every single morning to polinate the huge, sunny yellow flowers. My husband and I have enough squash to last us through winter. Thanks for making another wonderful video, and again, so glad to see you back on.
Oxo pop containers everywhere… someone is doing well
Hi Mark,
What's growing month by month would be great but maybe what you are planting or about to plant month by month. Certainly a benefit to people living in SEQ.
videos ive always wanted to see were side by side growing comparisons between two or more ways of growing a plant, sorting out what works and what doesn't, but i think that doesnt fit your channel well – it seems a very scientific presentation where your approach, while scientifically correct as far as ive seen so far, is more presented in a "Bob Ross meets Steve Irwin" kind of way (and i think this is why you succeed as you do, you're absolutely delightful)
Can you please do a month by month video on what you actually plant each month
Love your idea of month growing. Love every video you do. I'm in Melbourne., Melbourne cup day, Dandenong ranges Mountain, Monbulk. 8 degrees, rain, hail, windy. Will we ever see spring 😔😔👍😁
A bit bitter but I can get use to it. You'll eat anything if you get hungry enough…….true word from My good friend from Mexico that there refrigerator was a hole in the ground under there house. Thank you for make these videos to help us get back to taking care of your self.

Love your videos. I was wondering do you do garden tours for people. We have a group of homeschool kids and we work the community garden once a week and are looking at doing field trips to other community gardens and other set ups done by individuals we live in SE Qld as well. 🙂
I recently saw an advert for Groundfridge. Seems a cool but EXPENSIVE product. Curious if you have any input about them?
Juice that tree lettuce to help you sleep
I have potatoes, corn beans and tomatoes. Ohh capsicum as well.
Hi Mark from "Sausage Fisherman". 😂 That's what the subtitles said. Love your channel.
I love the idea of a monthly video with a tour of what you’re growing. 😅
perpetual pumpkin 🎃 — name: japple kent? I want to buy seeds!!!
Big thumbs up for the monthly what's growing videos 👍
Good to see you again, Mark ❤️🙏🏽
Mate, how are you getting away with not bagging against fruit flies…..
Hi Mark, my partner and I love all your videos. It’s inspired us to start our own little garden. Although we live in NSW I like the idea of a monthly video. I also had a thought, I would love you to share some of your families favourite recipes from ingredients straight from the yard. Cheers! Happy growing.
I'd like to point out that the YouTube captions had your intro as "G'day I'm Mark from sausage fisherman.." as it was auto playing in the feed. Not even mad.
A month by month update on what to plant would be helpful. I live not far from you but I'm behind in what to plant when! Loving your video's.
I live in Tamworth area its a Temperate climate here and i was so surprised that your crops are so far ahead of mine! Am i too far behind or is it because of the tropical climate your in that you have to grow ahead of us down sth?
Great video! We are just down the road in Wamuran! It’s good to know what else we can grow in this climate at this time of year! Keep the vids coming! ☺️☺️
I’d love to see some videos on what varieties you are growing.
Love the idea of month by month suggestions for veggies! Glad you are feeling better!
YES! 100% Mark do each month as it's own video! Because more content = good for us! Plus they should be easy for you to smash out??
Plus, you can do a cheeky youtuber "year in review" or "top 10 plants I grew this year" wrapup with those as a base 😉
Mark, can you do one on the best ways to store seeds, some us are quite confused in Upper Brisbane areas, as there are so many opinions….like storing fresh coffee beans…fridge or Freezer….you know what I mean…..We luv ya Mate 👍🇦🇺🇳🇿 Thank you
Great idea for the episodes would be a great help if U also mention what you are preparing to plant as well in the month. I live not far from you in Logan on 2.5 acres just setting up my birdies beds now also a Vegepod, thanks for the inspiration to give it a go.
My dill is taking over, I never water or fertilize it and I regularly chop it down and chuck it into the compost but it just keeps growing!
as always a load of fun and laughs as well, your on the way to super stardom
We used fresh dillcrowns in cooking, works great with sea food but also in pickles.
