Is Allotment Gardening Worth It? | The Value of Community Gardening

In this video, we discuss the actual monetary value of gardening in a rental garden.

This season, we rented a 24’x36′ garden space in our local community garden, and after all the harvests are finished, we wanted to reflect on the value of the vegetables we harvested in comparison to the cost of the rental plus the cost of planting, to determine whether or not it was worthwhile to try to garden in an allotment.

Spoiler alert! It was definitely worth it! We harvested several hundred pounds of food from our community garden at low cost to us, and we are definitely planning to rent a garden next season as well.

Please enjoy our analysis of this gardening experience.

Thank you so much for watching this October allotment gardener video!

  1. I watch a lot of British gardeners and from what I see, like you said, they keep it year round and some even have chickens and goats at their allotments. But that’s an amazing haul stats and yes it’s definitely worth it.

  2. I have thought about trying to start a community garden… do you have recommendations on resources for that? You said they turned the soil and added compost at season end… anything else they do for your $75 participation fee? Thanks!

  3. Any recommendations on sweet potato or regular potato slips? Haven’t been able to find any? Have a few sprouting in the cupboard but would like to try and grow some next year. Any info would be greatly appreciated

  4. You can use insect fabric over the potatoes. I did the same thing we use our local community garden for extra space. Plus the soil has been used organically for so long.

  5. 🇬🇧 yes here in the UK we keep our Allotment so long as we pay the yearly rent to the local council. At the site that I had they shut off the water over the winter until April but they don't assist with anything else 😄. No maintenance on the plots at all. It's up to the individual tenant to do that. Rent is very cheap though. I had half a plot 15 × 45 feet and paid £13 for a full year. Sadly due to work commitments no longer have it but I have a small space at home to use . 😁
