This is 1 out of 4 urban sketch videos for the year! For the month of March, I decided to sketch at the beautiful Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park here in San Diego 🙂 For each urban sketch video, I want to go with the seasons, so for Spring time I instantly thought of cherry blossoms! Q: Do you draw from memory or use a photo as reference?
A: When I film my speed drawing videos (i.e. Slice Of Doodles, Moment Diary…) I always use a photo as reference. But if I’m out urban sketching, I draw from what I see in front of me and from memory (especially when there’s people and moving objects involved.

Q: Why do you draw triangles on your Doodleina’s noses and is there a meaning behind it?
A: First of all, the triangle serves as a ‘beauty mark’/’branding’ for my Doodleinas and when I urban sketch people. I wanted to add this subtle touch to my illustrations to set them apart from other illustrators/artists as well. Also, I seem to have this strong connection with this particular shape, and it’s evident in the way I write my name. The triangle is very versatile and has a lot of great meanings depending on its orientation (point-up/point-down) that I resonate with: creativity, harmony, femininity, earth&water, etc. The triangle has 3 sides and the number 3 is one of my favorite numbers.

Q: Can you do a tutorial on how to draw faces?
A: I’ve been trying to avoid this because tutorials aren’t my forte, but I will try my best. Please be patient!
