👩🏻‍🦰 A B O U T M E:
Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are YouTube, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s YouTube channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her YouTube channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

  1. Hello Plant People! Indoor content is headed your way since we are officially frozen here in Sask. Everyone take a breath and watch the entire video before lobbing off my head.

COST: Yes these are expensive. But like I mentioned in the video if your city is charging you for garbage disposal by weight or container size it may be worth it.

DEHYDRATOR: Yes, it is a dehydrator combined with a shredder. I mention this in the video. If you want to dehydrate and grind your food waste that is fine, it's going to give you the same result.

NOT COMPOST: Yes, this is not actual compost. As I mention in the video it is food waste that has been heated and ground down. I mentioned in the video that you should not use this straight or anything above 10% by volume. I go over in the video the risks of over-applying the byproduct.

  2. Wow, that composter looks awesome! We have a Foodcycler and love it, but it is super basic in comparison. Since the summer sun in Texas is harsh AF, we use the Foodcycler compost/potpourri as a secondary mulch underneath the straw mulch layer in our garden beds and containers. It’s pretty remarkable how much food breaks down in these little machines. Also, as an Aerogardenoholic, I must say, nice hydro station. There’s something magical about harvesting homegrown tomatoes and herbs in cold seasons 👌👌

  3. Those things use so much energy to turn a little bit of waste into semi compost that it’s complete BS

  4. These machines are basically re-marketed bread makers. Thunderfoot did a couple videos on the Lomi that I would recommend watching before buying one of these. The major difference being that the bread makers appear to be made better. I don't have a need for one of these machines as I am already composting naturally, year-round. However, if I did have a need for one of these, I would head over to the thrift store and buy a couple bread machines to see if I like what they produce, and save yourself hundreds of dollars.

  5. What an interesting product! I was actually thinking how useful this would be during the winter months here in southern Alberta. We have compost bins that are picked up by the city, but in winter it’s only every couple weeks and everything you put in the green bin at -20 just freezes and sticks inside the bin…..it’s a total mess. It’d be great to grind up the usual compost and save it in a bin for spring.

  6. Thanks, great video! Do you know how often you might have to change the charcoal filter and what the cost of a replacement filter is?

  7. I looked into the Lomi and decided against it because they had a monthly supply subscription. It doesn’t seem like yours would need anything since it’s a dehydrator/grinder but maybe it does?

  8. Wow, humans just love to try to out do God. Just throw that stuff outside and let nature handle it…. Simple.

  9. Hi Ashley, do they require new blades or sharpening? I would assume that the blades would become blunt over time? I’m just wondering what the upkeep would be? Thankyou for another great video and I hope you add some new items to your Doot store…..perhaps one of these?

  10. I might have to spring for something like this. I struggle with keeping my compost bin at a reasonable level through the deep winter too. I also want to be able to deal with what's left of the chicken carcasses we end up with after making stock. The only thing is, I wonder whether there are any concerns re: biological magnification if one were to process meat or bones in a conposter like this.

  11. I'm so glad I came across your channel. Such interesting information you provide, even though, I'll admit, the science can sometimes be over my head lol. The manner in which you provide us with info is entertaining, and I love that you recognize the quirkiness of it 🙂
I hope that you continue to update us on the progress and results from the compost/dehydrator do-dad. I am curious…. whatcha growing in the AeroGarden there, and how do you like it for the long haul?

  12. I love my Vitamix version and use it every day. I keep the dried results/scraps in a big bucket and twice a year (spring and fall) I spread it thinly around my gardens for the worms. I don’t miss the wet smelly mess of keeping kitchen scraps in a compost bin. The prices of lthese machines need to come down quite a lot for more people to use it though. I got my from a county program so it was subsided.
