I show how to grow organically using my Off-Grid Self-Watering Container gardening system. I prefer growing organically. It is just as easy as using chemical fertilizers and you get much healthier plants and better tasting food.

Nice maters.
This has been a great series of vids. I'll be doing mine this week.
Thanks
What website would I do that on? My wife has a website for her gardening HoustonGardeningTipsDOTOrg.
sounds like good stuff ! I don't think we have MicroLife around here .. must be a Texas thing..
is it omri certified organic?
You might have killed it with lime! – Know soil PH before messing $ with lime! – There's No reason to use lime in ready made potting soil! – And know that it takes 68 degrees F for a tomato flower to set! – You need these low night time temps, or enjoy a green plant! – Cherry tomato's are different. – Another thing to know is a tomato plant is a vine!. Stake it for room. As a seedling remove the first node of leaves, and bury half-way to the next node when up-potting.Makes a stronger plant!
Mazeltov for your new tomato baby!
@HonestJohn60 – I guess you haven't bothered to go back into LDSPrepper's channel to look at the harvests he and his Mrs. have enjoyed in previous years? I visited your channel and didn't see any uploaded videos on planting/gardening? Suggest you visit houstongardeningtipsDOTorg for further information on who you are commenting to. Hope this helps.
NICE… Thanks for sharing.
It doesn't indicate that on the bag. So, I am guessing it is not, but it could be. I know MicroLife isn't available everywhere. I listed what it is made from to give everyone an idea what to look for in an organic fertilizer or what to use to make your own. I hope that helps.
Awesome. Please let us know how it goes. If you can take video that would even be better.
thanks , just checked out the ingredients … it's pretty much organic , but because it includes cotton seed meal they can't 100% approve it ,because 99% of all cotton is sprayed with chemicals for the boll weevil.. so it's 99+% organic .lol . more than good enough for most people . i'm sure you agree…. sure wish I had something like this in my area.
I just needed a quick comment without an hours research. Maybe his soil needs the rapid PH change? – I would of liked to know.. I'm sorry to have bothered you, and you had to go out of your way. It wont happen again. 😉
Thank you so much for checking and explaining that. I wouldn't have know that.
Great video, Thanks
I like the idea of automatic watering BUT you dont show the whole set uip. Can you make a video showing the start to finish of the system. I dont understand where the water begins.
God Bless
I have a playlist on my channel showing everything.
I have watched all of your self watering videos and understand it all now except for the 24 small holes in tnhe bottom of the bucket/ Why do you need them with the wick in the middle? What is their purpose.
Thanks!
They provide aeration for the micro life in the soil.
Is it possible to use regular soil without the pearlite or peatmoss with this setup?
No because regular soil will not wick the water up. If it does it will retain the water and drown the roots of the plant. It also will smoother the roots of oxygen.
Please check out GlobalBuckets website. globalbuckets . org
They have a similar setup but only uses regular soil for the wicking effect.
LOL, I have. It says, "You can NOT use ordinary dirt in your global buckets." It even gives their recipe, "70% Sphagnum Peat, 20% Vermiculite, 10% Perlite". There is no soil in their system. If there were it would not work.
First, thank you for all of your efforts to share your learning experiences. Second, would you mind clearing up the following: In this video you mention using a slow release fertilizer. Yet, in an earlier video, you specifically state not to use a slow release. Instead, you say to use a continual release fertilizer.
Great question. I'm sorry for the confusion. This product states that it is a slow release fertilizer. In reality all organic fertilizers are slow release compared to chemical fertilizers. I was referring to not using chemical slow release fertilizers. Thanks for asking.
If I was to grow a Dwarf Meyer Lime Tree and Dwarf Banana Tree in food grade buckets, do you think I can use the same soiless Potting mix?
Absolutely. You will need to fertilize them because they will be there longer than a typical growing season. I would recommend fertilizing them by using compost tea. You can make compost tea very cheaply at home.
Can I plant veggies in the self watering bucket indoors with an LED grow light and a mylar grow tent? Yes I will try to make my own compost tea! Thanks for the suggestions!
Yes. That is a great idea. I have seen 12 foot tall tomato plants grown inside in buckets and grow lights.
I was looking into LED grow lights. Have you used them before and which ones do you recommend? Also I saw some info on making compost teas so people simply steep the compost with success or do you recommend brewing the compost tea with molasses and other additives like kelp?
I have not used LED grow lights. I recommend brewing the tea. There is a lot of dis-information about brewers and teas. I'm testing brewers and recipes right now for an upcoming compost tea video. Stay tuned.
You can use any organic fertilizer. I would ask your local plant nursery, not a big box store.
I started to make the buckets with all the holes and I was wondering if I can put the seeds into each hole instead of started them in starter trays, just put them in the holes in the bucket so there is no need to transplant later. Can you also go over the soilless mix for me again? For a 5 gallon bucket how much Peat Moss, etc… Thanks so much!
Yes, that is the correct price.
Yes you can plant seed directly into the soil mix. For any size bucket, fill it with 70% peat moss then 30% pearlite.
Way to go on the net cups and MicroLife. Mix one cup of MicroLife throughout the soil mix. Check your soil pH after you have added water and mixed the peat moss, perlite and MicroLife. If the mix is between 5-7 pH then do not add any lime. If you don't have a way to check the pH don't add any lime. Typically watering by itself will raise the pH level of soil. Best of luck.
Thank you for commenting. For directions on the float bucket search my channel for " Off-Grid Self-Watering Container Gardening System: Made Easy" at 5:35 I talk about the float bucket. Put the float about 4" up from the bottom of the bucket. There are links below the video for all the items including the float. I hope that helps.
Our water has a really high lime content. Should I leave out the gardener's lime for my containers? Enjoy your vids very much. Some truly out of the box thinking and techniques.
LDS Prepper has a youtube channel where he explains how he uses a rain water capture system to keep his buckets full of water. If you use tap water then you'll have to get/buy a soil testing kit and find out where your Ph level is. Add lime if you need to.
If you look at LDS Prepper's youtube channel, you'll see an entire series on how he captures rainwater in 250 gallon totes. He runs a hose off the totes into the first bucket which automatically fills and refills the rest of the chain of buckets.
Sphagnum moss is used primarily in crafts and packing. While peat moss and sphagnum moss come from the same plant, they represent different points in its life cycle. The idea of adding moss to the vermiculite is that the moss acts like a sponge and the mixture (it's not soil mind you) stays moist by drawing the water up.
Thanks!
Can you make a water bottled type of some sorts
THANK you for sharing I have a question how did you get the 1/4 drip line to stay in the pail n not leak water tyvm
sal
Could you clarify for me, why the plants shown in the elevated buckets are not planted at the very top of the bucket, with a dome and plastic cover? Will more mix be added as the plant grows and then domed and covered?
Have you heard the talk about – "Shuzman Awesome Container Homes" (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? Ive heard some great things about it and my buddy built a great shipping container home with it.
