I was sad to learn that my friend’s staghorn fern (photo from December 2015) was overrun with mealy bugs and had to be discarded. Let me use this photo to explain that when you first buy a staghorn fern, they are grown in regular plastic pots and potting soil. While this is mostly for the grower’s convenience, you can continue to let it grow in a pot for years (as my friend did in this photo – but this position is just for winter storage). If you decide to mount it, the reason you use sphagnum moss is because it functions just like soil in terms of moisture/nutrient retention but doesn’t crumble apart as easily #staghornfern #platycerium #platyceriumbifurcatum #houseplants #indoorplants #houseplantsofinstagram #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantlove #plantlife #plantsofinstagram #plantstagram #botanical #botany #greenery #foliage #leaflove #leaf #urbanjunglebloggers #jungalowstyle
