In order to successfully grow carrots, you need to know what type of growing conditions they prefer 🥕
They want cool weather, consistent moisture (especially until they germinate), loose soil, and minimal root disturbance.
1. Carrots are cool season crops. They perform better when grown in spring/fall vs summer. Similar to other root vegetables, they taste sweeter after a frost.
2. Carrot seeds must stay moist until they germinate (sprout). If the top of the soil crusts before the seed germinates, it likely will not grow.
3. Carrots need loose soil to grow. If you have heavy clay soil, grow carrots in containers or raised beds. Growing carrots in compacted soil will result in misshapen and/or stunted carrots.
4. Carrots resent root disturbance. Plant the carrot seeds directly into your garden and avoiding transplanting them. Don’t try to move them.
