Thank you for sharing your experience.
I planted sweet potatoes for the first time this past spring but then we ended up having to move August 1st & so we didn't ever get to harvest them. I'm looking forward to planting some next spring though.
Our vines turned black with the frost so I dug them up. They were tiny anyways. Looking for a good harvest next year 😊
Blessings ❤️
I'm try to find Evangeline sweet potatoes for next year. Danny from Deepsouthhomestead grew them along with others. The Evangeline way out preformed all the others even in drought conditions.
My friend had the same issue with big knots of sweet taters. Her soil got compacted from the heavy rains. I didn't have any compaction, my soil was very loose…But, I only got a hand full of taters. We have enough for Thanksgiving, and that makes me very happy! So, onward we go! 😃
Love your videos!
Thank you, now I know I need to harvest my sweet potatoes since I’m in the DFW area!
Is this mycorrhyzal something to be added only in spring? Or can be added in fall to overwinter & start working after last freeze in spring?
Just like you, my soil is too hard & root veggies failed this year. Hopefully next year will be better for both of us 😊
Pretty good harvest for pots.
Another thing you might research is gypsum or gypsite.
I garden in the desert using city water. My soil is alkaline with a hardpan where routine watering stops reaching thru the soil. So, I've learned to vary length of watering times.
I too use mycorrhizae to help penetrate hardpan and bring minerals up to the plants. It makes plants and soil more drought tolerant. Gotta keep adding food, aka mulch, to keep the soil microorganisms healthy. If you're not using the buckets thru the Winter, you might top them with leaves/or chicken bedding.
Sad that harvest didn't do as well as last year but every year is alittle different
Looks like a decent harvest. Also, keep the soil turning and hopefully next year you will have no bottom density next year.
Thanks for sharing your tips so we can move forward next year with our harvests
This has nothing to do with sweet potatoes….unless you air fry them. Do you have any air fryer recipes?
We planted late (very 1st time for sweet potatoes) so will dig the first of ours soon. Glad we did not get a bad freeze last week. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Can u Tell us what those things are for fluffy? Not sure I'm spelling it right 🤔
In my containers I make a mix of potting mix, peat and pearlite. It keeps it light and airy. Each new year I just remineralize it and add fertilizer. I had an epic fail on sweet potatoes too. I used blood meal instead of bone. 🤪 oh well. My garden motto is…Next Year!!!
Thanks Jill for sharing. ❤
Hey Jill we are going to harvest this weekend. I mixed a good amount of perlite in the soil so that should help keep it from packing. I also mixed in a good amount of bone meal. We will film our harvest this weekend. God Bless your family, Mike
Pulled the last raised bed of sweet potatoes yesterday. Two trays of nice baking size potatoes. Good tips about the EM 1 and michorizal fungi. Thanks Jill.
That's a pretty decent harvest. Better than a lot of people in the south this year.
Do the fingerlings need to be peeled before canning?
Maybe you could train the German Shepherd to dig for the rodents!
We like to mix pine needles into our clay soil to keep the soil loose. They break down slowly and the sweet potatoes like the acidity. We grew some that were huge!
As gardeners most of us see challenges as a learning experience. Sweet potatoes are my challenge.
they love dry hay with sheep poo thrown over them planted in soil.
you could add sand.they will push out. jill stock a few out in the paddock.
anyhings a blessing at this stage. try planting in lucerne hay. maybe. love you.
have you tried dry canning your potatos. great idea mine are wonderful. 95°f here at 11am
Do you use the leaves and vines for fertilizer? I heard you could. My sweet potato harvest was sad. Lots of vines, but not many potatoes. I think my soil was also too dense. I also used sweet potato seeds from Walmart vs. 1 organic sweet potato from Costco that gave me 10lbs. This year skinny fingerlings as well…in tubs and in a raised bed. Anyways, added compost to empty spots and cover crop for now.
Love your attitude!
I have to really work on my garden for growing sweet potatoes. I grew some this year, buy they didn't do very good in our red clay soil. I try to improve it every year with cover crops, but I have a lot way to go. I'm gonna start adding compost and lots of organic matter to hopefully loosen it up.
Great harvest Jill!
You guys got pops too, Take care of things for A few days. Take off and go somewhere for A bit. Me and my wife put it off to long. Just go somewhere random for A Day or two. Love you guys.
You and Gregg need it.
You guys need it, Jill. It's not all about the garden.
Found out this year that my hens love sweet potato leaves! Ill be planting there own lil patch next spring. Thanks Jill for all your tips it helps so much ❤
Thank you for sharing!! From Fate…
Where do yall get your tubs? Have you tried the grow bags? Contemplating which way to go for next year 🤔
Wish we could grow sweet potatoes here! I grew one ornamentaly one year, pretty cool!
😊
I had a lot of sweet potatoes. How do you can them? You are doing a video?
Do you think it would help to turn the soil once a week to keep it loose….with a hand rake or shovel?
I’ve got to do mine..
