Protect your property by having a proper drainage system in place. A well-maintained landscape can increase the value of a home, and installing a drainage system is often less costly than repairing the water damage itself.

PROPER DRAINAGE CAN PROTECT THE VALUE OF A HOMEResearch indicates that a well-maintained landscape can increase the value of a home. On the other hand, a poorly maintained landscape can lead to costly water damage to the structure of the house. Installing a drainage system can be less costly than repairing the water damage itself. Given the destructive effect that water has on house structures and landscapes, every landscape needs a proper drainage system.

MANAGE DOWNSPOUT RUNOFFOne of the biggest sources of runoff water in a landscape is the downspout that funnels water from the roof to the immediate area around the house.

Don’t connect the downspout directly to drain pipe. Leaves and debris from the roof that are carried through the downspout can go into the drain pipe and eventually clog the drainage system.

Do use a catch basin under the downspout to catch debris from the roof and direct water to drain pipes. The catch basin has a built-in sump area to collects particles before they can enter the pipeline.

DRAIN PLANTER AREAS
Without a drainage system, the root systems of flowers and other sensitive plants can be damaged by overwatering, and can create health and safety issues. The catch basin can remove excess water before the root systems are damaged.

Don’t use a flat grate to drain flowerbeds or areas with mulch. The debris can clog the top of a flat grate and prevent draining.

Do use an atrium grate, which has a domed design that rises above the surface of the ground to block leaves, mulch, and other debris near the base of the grate while allowing water to drain through the top. Atrium grates should only be used in areas where there is no traffic.

ELIMINATE PUDDLING
Landscape naturally absorbs runoff water until it becomes saturated and water begins to puddle throughout the lawn. Using catch basins at various low spots throughout the lawn can eliminate puddling by allowing the excess water to be collected and redirected to safer areas.

DRAIN RUNOFF FROM HARDSCAPES
Channel drains are long, narrow drains installed within the concrete of the driveway or patio. Channel sizes vary from one inch to twelve inches in width. Like a roof gutter, channel drains collect large volumes of water that flow across hard surfaces before it can puddle or flow into the inside of the house or adjacent landscape.

DISCHARGE WATER WITH A POP-UP EMITTER
Water captured in your drainage system needs a point of release. The Pop-up Emitter works at a low point of the drainage system to discharge water collected from upstream. As water pressure builds, the cap pops up to disperse water and closes once the flow diminishes. Check with your local municipality if this is permitted in your area.

LEACH WATER BACK INTO THE SOIL WITH A DRY WELL
An alternative method to discharging the water is by slowly percolating or leaching it back into the landscape. The Flo-Well Dry Well works as a large cistern buried in the landscape that allows water to slowly leach out into the subsoil and prevent the pollutants from being washed out into the streets. Many cities have required that stormwater be retained within the property to reduce pollution of resources.

The installation of a proper drainage system adds value to the property and protects it from water damage.

  1. I noticed in the video that PVC pipe is used instead of corrugated pipe. Currently, I have corrugated pipe installed underground in my backyard that is connected to one downspout and I would like to connect my sump pump drain to the downspout drain. Is it okay to do that? Also, if PVC pipe is used and connected to the flow well, should the PVC pipe have holes in the bottom leading to the flow well?

  2. If you're gutters are protected with gutter guards, is a catch basin necessary under the downspout? Is there a way to deal with shingle grit interfering with flow in the corrugated pipes?

  3. Do you ever experience problems with sitting water in the catch basins? I'm considering installing them, but I'm worried about the potential for mosquitos. Thank you!

  4. FYI. Pop up drains don’t work well when the flow is high. They can’t emit water fast enough unless you remove it.

  5. What kind of drainage system would you recommend for a playground rubber mulch bed? A highly traveled type of mulch bed. Seems to be a larger grated catch basin with fine grating?

  6. If anyone can answer, please do! We are buying a house in Poconos PA. The house sits on a hill and all water runs down towards the driveway and then creates a pretty big mosquito pond. The house is located in a gated community. The roads are not paved. The question is: where do we redirect all the water to? There are no sewers. We do have a lake across the street from our house, there is a road (unpaved) and a green belt in between. Looking for advice! Thank you kind people!! 😉

  7. Why not just install a filter or gutter guard on your roof rather than adding a catch basin? Assuming you keep vegetation away from the roof you should only need to brush away any build up in roof filters once a year at most. Removing vegetation from the roof area also improves fire safety.

  8. Very informative video thank you for explaining my issue, hopefully it will solve my problem

  10. Nobody mentions the Northern locations in regards to the pop-ups.
You run it down to 'almost' the sidewalk.
Then, either a rain or snow-melt event gets followed by a drop in temps. What then follows is an ambulance and the always-present Lawyer!
Also, after a decent snowfall, wouldn't the weight of the snow prevent the pop-up from popping-up?

  11. Our house seems to sit in the lowest part of the neighborhood and as such, our yard always floods in a rainstorm. Also, none of the houses in the neighborhood (older Craftsman homes) have gutters and the homes are pretty close together, so there is a lot of water that comes off of our home and our two neighbor homes. Would you be able to recommend a total solution? We have used your Dry wells at other of our homes and they work great!

  12. Hi, I have a drain with no way water can get out except through maybe a giant washer and bolt and nut, I have never seen that before. If water is backing up am I suppose to release the nut more?

  13. Best concise video, gave me confidence to walk into homedepot and get the materials I need to begin the project!

  14. never dump water into a catch basin , also have fall with your pvc pipes and it will never clogg with debri

  15. my lawn is lower than the street hence the pooling, how is the catch basin going to drain uphill without a pump?

  16. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matthew 7:13-14)
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
