This week we visit a really special home in Bukit Batok West. Homeowners YaYa and Jun Yao have really transformed this 1,490 square feet 5-room resale HDB into a unique home + studio arrangement.

From the custom made metal gate at the entrance, it sets the tone for the distinctive details of the home. They customised the kitchen to make it smaller, but what’s really interesting is that as the windows were originally outside the balcony, they removed it all to create a really serene balcony. As such, the balcony is like an extension, but separated with foldable glass panels that allow them to open up the entire space.

The size of the home also allowed them to create a separate studio space, that is accessible from the balcony – which is almost like coming out of your home and into your office/studio space. The studio itself features a custom light from Taiwan, and display cabinets to showcase materials.

Special thanks to YaYa and Jun Yao for showing us around their unique home. For more of their works, visit https://www.nodstudio.asia/works/

  1. Electrical outlets must cover..heavy rain may damage it😬
The spacious and simple design very calming 🪵😌

  2. Why is it that a lot of Taiwanese people think it’s cool to say words in English rather than in Mandarin in the middle of a sentence in Mandarin? This couple is really special… I wrote down (because I was shocked) the number of words that they said in English. More than 50!!! To this, I would like to say that, it doesn’t make you cool. It makes people think that you don’t know your mother tongue well enough OR that you think you sound fancier in a foreign language. Last, don’t tell me there is no word in Mandarin for what you wanted to express, because, as a matter of fact there is! Let me teach you: studio (工作室) balcony (阳台) architecture (建筑) TV (电视机) accessory (配件) design (设计) samples (样品) guest (客人) and LAST BUT NOT LEAST books (书). Like, really? There were obviously more words but, seriously… Anyway, I am not a hater, but I had to vent.

  3. I like it! very airy, spacious and bright with the extended balcony. Certainly beats many singapore homes hands down. Cheers

  4. Nice place, can I ask where they get that black tickling clock features in the living room?

  5. Love the design, the laissez-faire decorations and not too fixated to one style. However, the mandarin-English or is it English – mandarin narrative makes the viewing so uncomfortable. Had to mute the narrative to truly enjoy this episode

  6. Try watching the series grand designs on BBC. You will agree these 2 have a long way to go although they try hard to speak like they know so much.

  7. One thing I dislike a great deal about Taiwanese and Chinese is they like to insert English words into their speech as though they are so afraid others may think they can't speak English. Singaporeans are different because we were schooled in a bilingual environment. Not so for China and Taiwan. No need to try so hard to blend in. Just be yourself. There is this guy named Paco (what a name) who is a real estate agent and in one video he introduced the bed in the master bedroom as a Queen'g'-sized bed. Chinese and Taiwanese speak beautiful mandarin. Why must you look down on your own language? Tell that Paco fellow who was marketing eden residences capitol it's king and queen and not kin and queen'g'. No need to speak English if you can't speak well. Just speak your (and our) beautiful mandarin. 😁😁

  8. I really love the open concept of the wardrobe! instead of full cabinet, the use of open partition is incredible!

  9. They should consider switching the TV for a projector, so that it would be even more sudden in appearance.

  10. Can I just say how great the bgm was for this video?it really sets the mood for the great content

  11. well done on this home decor. it looks so unique and it even feels Taiwanese.

  12. Minimalist +lot natural light + relax vibe = excellent living environment.

Only thing I dislike is the TV , I would replace it with a projector instead of a 3 legged stand , look unstable

  13. No kids okay la. But even when they do have kids, they probably would buy a bigger house and still would decor the house as nicely. Both of them used their design background to match and complement with each other’s preferences. Cool!

  14. I love the design of the living room. It feels spacious and relaxing. Sometimes simplicity and minimalism are the key to happiness.
Excellent example of Less is more ❤️

  15. The balcony area is spacious..wonder if this is an EA or 5room flat? I like their concept for it. Natural and can grow plants and also sit around to chill with a coffee.

  16. Hi guys, I am also looking to design my own metal gate, may I get the contractor's contact? Thank you!

  17. 很舒暢 很寬。
    超愛你們融入大自然的元素在裡頭
    那沒窗戶的設計很跌破眼鏡 💖
