@Linda201128 Yes, you can. You need to nick (scarify) the seeds with a file until you get just past the hard black outer shell. This will speed germination, otherwise they might not ever germinate. Soaking in water overnight before planting in addition to this also helps.
Keep in mind that on a hybrid plant, seeds will not be true to mother plant, meaning you will either get a wild variety, or they won't germinate at all. Propogation by dividing is the best bet in this case.
A neighbor was giving away a trash can full of bulbs this Fall so I grabbed half of them. They are in HUGE clumps, so they still need split. Thanks for this!
I bought a plant at Home Depot and it had some blooms. Can I do this to the plant in the fall or should I wait till next year to do it. I'm afraid the plant isn't mature enough and I don't want kill it. The plant has a big foliage and is about 12 inches tall. Any suggestion is appreciated.
This was incredibly helpful thank you, I recieved 3 foot tall Canna's from an inlaw and they multiplied within 6 months to 20, now a year later after the first transplant didnt work quite so well, I have another 20 to replant lol so once again thank you for this wonderful video
This helps a lot, I was going to replant this weekend in hillcountry TX, but I think I might wait until it gets colder and they stop blooming. Thanks for the advice!
I love watching your informative videos Yolanda. You are the best!
Ton of help and informative. Thank you!
Shake it girl!
How do I tell if I have a Canna or Calla Lily and can I divide both please?
Thank you so much! your videos have helped me to become a better gardner.
good vid..loved the shake shimmy dance
Are these the same as Calla Lillies?
So helpful thanks
Thank you! You totally answered my questions on dividing them in warm climates. In Florida, my plants have outgrown their container and yet, they're always blooming. I was afraid to divide them. Fear no more.
Just the info I was looking for. But warn me next time you take a scissor and just cut them like that, my heart traveled up my throat and back when you cut them so unceremoniously, lol.
Shake it like a salt shaker girlfriend!!
So I noticed if you don't divide them after they grow into those big clumps the flowering process is slow so you have to get out there and divide them
She knows what she's talking bout! Love it
BEST canna transplant video I've found. Thank you for doing more than standing by the plant ;). I'll shake, shake, shake that dirt off!
You’re the cutest
Immediately you know this woman knows plants, and this plant. Making a mess is 1/2 or more the fun. Hacking plants, its a 'if it doesn't kill it, it makes it stronger', she knows what she's talking about. Didn't know they loved to be crowded, but agree congested looks better for a year. Peat moss is a distaster, please don't use peat. It's eco-footprint (travel to markets, tools/heavy equipment used to harvest, etc.) is a nightmare, and destroys Canadian peat bogs.
woooooooooooooooooooooooow been searching for an indepth tutorial….yours is the best by far!!! thank you so much……. need to go replant now. Thanks again
Thank you so much
Much appreciated. Got a big old canna that is in desperate need of splitting so this has made it a whole lot easier.
Would this be the same for Calla lilies?
Great video! I live in a cold climate, short summers, and took my cannas in for the winter. Now it is spring and the leaves have started to grow about 6 inches. I would like to divide them into 2 pots. If I cut off the new green growth, will it come back soon or should I leave the green growth and just divide them? Thank you for your help!
need a better camera person that keeps the plant in frame
Thank you for doing this in 3 min not 25 like others.
Thanks. I should have watched this video YESTERDAY before I divided a blooming Canna.
How cute are you?? Thanks so much!
Heya! I have mine started from seed. Each plant is about 5 inches tall right now. Will they divide and conquer this year? Or the next?
Thank you for being relatable. I enjoyed your video.
