Murin-an garden is an extraordinary place of natural and scenic beauty located in the middle of Kyoto city. The house and garden used to be a private residence belonging to the statesman Aritomo Yamagata. The garden was created by Jihei Ogawa 7th, a leading Japanese garden designer, and finished in 1898. During this time period new approaches to Japanese gardening were taken and traditional designs started to get influenced by Western style gardens. Murin-an was built with the intent to recreate a landscape scene of natural beauty and to have a private space to enjoy during all seasons of the year. This goal was mastered incredibly well. The garden has an area of only 3100 m2 or 33 000 square ft and is surrounded by roads. Yet, the visitor is under the illusion of walking through a stunning mountain landscape.
Murin-an was donated to Kyoto city in 1941 and designated as a national place of scenic beauty in 1951.
