The Best Japanese garden outside Japan

Nestled in the scenic West Hills of Potland,Oregon, the Japanese garden is a tranqil heaven. Opened in 1963, it encompasses 5.5 acres with five separate garden styles, and includes meandering streams, intimate walkways and a spectacular view of Mt.Hood.

Japanese gardens have an ancient history influenced by Shinto, Buddhist, and Taoist philosophies. Upon entering a Japanese Garden, one hopes to experience a sense of peace, harmony and tranquility. Three primary elements are used in a Japanese garden design: stone, the “bones” of the landscape: water, the life-giving force; and plants, the tapestry of the four seasons. Other important elements include stone lanterns, water basins, arbors and bridges.

The five gardens are each asymmetrical in design and reflect nature in idealized form. Human scale is maintained throughout so that the visitor always feels part of the environment rather than being overpowered by it. This is a place to discard worldly thoughts and concerns and see oneself as a small but integral part of the universe. Join the Club of nature lovers who CARE!

I visited the Japanese garden on 9th September, 2016 and by uploading this video, am trying to relive the sense of beauty and harmony experienced then. Hope I manage passing on some of that to the viewers.

The Sand and Stone garden features the stark simplicity of weathered stones rising from a bedof “sand” (white gravel)
raked to suggest the sea. This garden style is typically found in Zen monasteries.

Koi are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp found in abundance in the streams which meander through the gardens. Outside the garden, we found American robins and chipmunks on the roadside.
