The former Shurinji-Temple Garden is the garden of Shogun Ashikaga’s residence, and is a pond Horai style garden with Tsurushima Kameshima.
The clear stream of the Ado River flowing through the valley and the mountains of the Hira Mountains, the dynamic stonework that incorporates the terrain, the composition like a landscape painting, and the space composition with a wonderful depth and expanse. 京都駅から約1時間40分、室町時代の武将細川高国作庭「旧秀隣寺庭園」のある滋賀県高島市の興聖寺へ行きました。室町幕府将軍12代足利義晴13代義輝が、京を逃れて数年間滞在し、家臣らとともに集落を築いた場所です。旧秀隣寺庭園は足利将軍邸宅の庭で、鶴島亀島を配した池泉蓬莱式庭園。谷を流れる安曇川の清流と比良山系の山並み、その地形を取り込んだ豪快な石組みと山水画のような構図、奥行きと広がりが見事な空間構成は、とにかくかっこいい。
重森三玲が「この庭だけは見飽きない」と毎年訪れた庭園です。
また興聖寺は、1243年鎌倉時代に宋から帰国した曹洞宗の開祖道元禅師が訪れ、道元の進言によって領主佐々木信綱（朽木信綱）が創建したお寺です。庭園見学前に拝観させて頂き、お寺の由緒や歴史、平安時代に作られた御本尊など大変丁寧にご説明いただきました。
