The biggest barrier to saving money and having endless compost, is just waiting on building a compost bin. Use this 15 minute build for all your cold composting needs. Use it for leaves to make leaf mold and get the benefit of worm castings. Worms love leaves and tend to favor them.

This is just a simply project, I’m definitely getting one done ✊🏾 Have you ever done a Johnson-Su bioreactor or a variation of it?
I just set up my leaf bin today!🤯👍💚 I've already filled my darlec style compost bin and it reached 134 degrees Fahrenheit in 2 days 🤯👍🎃
Ladies, if you let a garden hose trickle a constant stream of water on the ground as you are pounding in your T-post it goes into the ground easily with much less effort.
Yeah! My biggest barrier is right! Not starting!
Can I make one with just grass clippings?
This is on my to do list for tmrw! I love making leaf mold!
I would like to start a leaf compost, however, I have a ton of pine trees dropping needles as well. Can I put pine needles in with the leaves?
Just in case you don't know this, Gary you are an EXCELLENT teacher. Plain, simple and to the point. People love you. Hope your channel is doing excellent. You deserve it. Your time and knowledge are very much appreciated. Helping people do inexpensive ways of gardening. Thank you for sharing.
All I have is Live Oak Trees at our place, takes about 10 years to compost
I have about 15 30 gallon black trash bags that I filled with leaves last year and just left them alone. I haven't opened them yet, but when I do I was wondering if it would be ok to just dump them all into a cold compost bin that I am going to make like the one you just made in this video. the reason I want to know is that I am not ready to use this yet and I can tell that some have broken down, but not all of them have.
“A year from now”😅
Hi Gary. I have a Toro leaf blower/vac that I use to bag the leaves and it kinda shreds them. Which is better for cold composting, raked leaving them whole or shredding with the vacuum?
I follow about 12 gardening channels and this one is my favorite. Overall I learn the most basic things to do from Gary and so many are quite inexpensive and less difficult, aggravating, or stressful. I have three of these compost piles going at the same time, but I used pallets to frame out my bins. I fill them with lots of leaves, food waste from the family, a ton of coffee, garden waste, cardboard, and shredded paper that doesn't have colored ink or plastic. Good stuff! My goal is to buy as few bags of soil as possible.
Thanks Gary! Is there any value in lining the inside walls with cardboard? Obviously, it won't last years, but it seems like it would help retain some moisture for a while. (I'm used to thinking in terms of the Denver area climate, where moisture is scarce.)
I'm doing it slightly differently but I have 28 garbage bags of leaves I'm hoping to have turned into leaf mold by the time I need it next year. Just finished yesterday in fact and already the ground is as full of leaves as when I started lol. I'm done raking and mowing and bagging by hand though. I'm going to get an attachment for my mower and do it like you. That looks soooo much easier.
Great info. Does it have to be in a sunny spot?
How about adding coffee grounds
I saw another video where guy put the leaves in a trash can and mulched them with a weed eater…they break down faster!
Good info. Been lovin the 2023 videos and will keep following!
Gary was so nice here in N.Y today that's exactly what I did. Used fence and post just like yours. I love the leaves. Fill up the bottom of my pots also in the spring with them so I don't have to use so much dirt. Can never have enough leaves.
do you have Critters underneath the leaves as they break down and when you go back and use it that's what I'm afraid of
A man that makes stuff & wears flannel 👍 yes!
I have actually been motivated to start a compost pile. I started it yesterday. Thanks, Gary!
For those that have small space like an Apartment/Townhouse just get a big trash can & drill holes on the bottom& put yr leaves in there. Leave the lid off. I tend to put other leaf scraps from the garden too as long as they are not infested.
