Our future garlic plot in the backyard garden has been covered with a black tarp for two months. Today is the big day when we pull back the tarp to see how the soil looks after being covered for that long.
Once we pull back the tarp, we’ll do a little cleanup around the edges of the plot to keep the grass from encroaching into the garden. Then we’ll apply a liberal amount of alfalfa pellets as we try to create a long-term nitrogen source for the garlic that will be in the ground for at least six months.
We’ll discuss the benefits of using alfalfa pellets in a backyard garden and tell you the instances where we like to use them. Lastly, we’ll show you all the beautiful garlic cloves that we will be planting in a few weeks.

Seems like those Tennessee buckets are working pretty good this year.
A Gator bucket works the best🐊🐊🐊😎😎🤣🤣Go Gators in a couple weeks!!!!!
I don't know about a dogs bucket but a GB Packers bucket would be the winning ticket. 😀😀 You didn't need to chill the elephant garlic, right? I thought elephant garlic grows pretty much anywhere. My garlic is in the ground already with the video coming out on 10/22.
As a soap maker, I use empty lard buckets for everything! LOL
I am only making an assumption by calculation here but I but I think that if the tarp is non-porous then underneath should not necessarily be it be very dry because I'm thinking moisture is going to repeatedly condense and soak into the soil
After chemical-burning a $150 tree I gave up on fertilizer-injectors. I EC test in 100 gallon batches with an irrigation pump now, usually 400-600 TDS for 10-14 inch-high garden of high-organic-soil.
Next time you do the Tarp near July please monitor for a max temperature. In Europe the anaerobic decomposition is used to produce gases to power engine-generators, so be cautious. I'd try it but IDK what I'd do with the tarp afterward as I don't have the space for the soil-solarizing practice, & that University deleted/upgraded their site so I have to re-find the promotion page claiming the practice can reach temperatures of 180f [I claim it can only reach 164f max].
This video is pure gold from start to finish. I started using alfalfa pellets with a heavy hand this year and had my most successful garden yet. I apply it at about the same rate you show. Since my season is too short for cover crops, I use the pellets as a pre-plant to feed the microbial network in the soil over the winter so it will be ready to accept the spring growth nutrients. Using 8-5-5 at planting and drip feeding Agrothrive plus some other additives as the plants cycle through their lives. Can't seem to locate any Dawgs bouquets, however.
Keep an eye out for those ducks… Looks a lot like layer pellets lol… 😉
I use pellets i use 5 gal bucket1/2bucket water1/2bucket pellets let sit overnight will be like meal inmorning then applie in rows under plants incorporate 2 weeks before planting have had great success
Got to use the special bucket!!!! Everything is better with a Bulldog "G" on it! Go Dawgs!!!! Gnaw on some gators nuggets next weekend! You can also use alfa in a compost pile if your pile is out of balance. And example would be a lot of fall leaves when green material or grass is not available. Just mix in some alfa pellets for your green material
About 3 yrs ago I found out by accident that alfalfa pellets work in the garden. I sold off my livestock and had a bag of pellets left over and used it as mulch for my pepper plants. Those jalapeños were 7 ft tall by the end of the season and produced like crazy. I hadn't even heard of using it.

Travis, Do you have any problems with the surrounding pine tree roots growing up into your garden beds ?
Hello Travis, I don’t know about that dog bucket, but I do know that my Kansas City Chiefs bucket has done a great job of spreading my alfalfa pellets. Lol. And now on the serious side, my garden is over for the year here in zone 6b we had had hard frost last Monday and Tuesday nights. But here in a couple of weeks I’ll go and spread my alfalfa pellets on my garden for the winter and in the spring I’ll put some alfalfa mill when I plant. Thanks for the videos love them, great info.
Your application rate looks good.
Back in my days i would feed my rabbits the pellets, use the manure for my garden. and have meat in the freezer and a nice garden. The cost of the alfalfa got too expensive. Paul
Another great one👍.
Quick question. Zone 9b down here in FL. Getting cool a bit early this year. I was planning to plant my 1st attempt at garlic this weekend but seeing that you're waiting until November, thinking I should wait until later November? Thanks!
I also use alfalfa pellets in three different ways…first I use the dry pellets the same as you do for a slow release method…. Second I use it as a mush by putting about 4cups pellets in a five gallon bucket then fill with water letting the pellets expand and break apart…I use that to mix in the soil for more accessible nutrients….Third I use it for tea as a ready soluble fertilizer for my plants and seedlings…I take a cup full of pellets and add it to a gallon jug filled with water…I let it sit for a few days before use….I have a playlist called Using Alfalfa Pellets on my YouTube channel where I detail the different uses of alfalfa pellets in the garden 🥰
How come you don’t leave the organic matter inside the soil?
Go Dogs. Alfalfa cubes works great in compost bin as well. Been using Alfalfa pellets in my garden for a few years now. Can also make compost using Alfalfa pellets and hard wood pellets.
I noticed, while using my LSU Tiger bucket to collect my figs, they taste extra sweet. The Dogs don't have a fig tree named after them, do they? Sorry. Maybe one day.
You also want some water on there and work them in to not attract animals, like rabbits, mice and rats, or deer….they all like Alfalfa. I use them on all of my 25 raised beds and vary application depending on how much Nitrogen each crop needs. I started using it about 4 years ago, and yes, I've noticed an increase of critters, so something to watch out for and take necessary action, as needed.
You about 6 days behind on this video Travis. You gotta put em out almost every day to keep the algorithm popping you up.
Dog gonit I forgot about the alfalfa pellets, can I spread them out even though everything is planted and it benefit the onions and leeks.
I prefer a Gator bucket myself 🙂
I spread the alfalfa pellets right in the furrow along with some organic fertilizer after the drip tape was down. Had the best ever garlic and onions this year.
Ha ha! Go, Dogs! Where can I get me one of those magic buckets? Do they sell them in Utah??
Roses can fundamentally survive off of alfalfa and Epsom salts.
After seeing what the Dawgs bucket does, I think a LSU bucket works the same!✌🏻
Does the agrithrive stink like fish emulsion?
Hey Travis, Great video I'm fixin to get my garlic in I got the bed all ready this week so it will go in this weekend. Near about 200 cloves goin in. I put 4" of straw on top for the winter and wait for the green to peek up thru then it comes off with some triple 13 for a good start. I always get the onion bed ready the same cover the same so early in the spring I can get the onions in when it is time to plant them.
I really like the idea of the alfalfa pellets have never tried them before. We are all done with the outside growing otherwise as it is fixin to be snowin here any week now.
I have been do some of the fermenting and working on the hot sauce from two or three of your videos should be ready soon. Take care be safe bye for now
Well, All right!!! I ordered me some Lazy Dog garlic !!!
I'm so happy I found your channel!! Go Dawgs!!
Enjoyed the video. Miss seeing the children sometimes
LSU bucket would be much better! Go TIGERS!
Haha, I gotta go get a Dawgs bucket 🪣
How dare you ROLL TIDE! 😂
Hahaha! Roll tide
MINI HA HA DOG
Travis, could you please add Dawgs buckets to the merch section of your website?
Hey Travis, wouldn’t mind trying that garlic but I am pretty far south not sure if it would work or not all the way down here in Southwest Florida. I do use the alfalfa pellets for my onions and in other beds that gets turned over frequently. I have been grinding them up into more of a powder didn’t know if that would help the process or not. Maybe I’ll just do a mixture this time around.
I’m pulling tarps today myself. Sure wish you were here to help! Don’t forget to try that “fold to the middle and roll up” method for rolling the tarps up on pvc pipe. I think you might like it! I unrolled my biggest (26×40’) tarp and it was a breeze! Unroll right down the middle of the plot and unfold to the edges. I can’t help but chuckle thinking about somebody in Australia going “what the *#^*# is a Dawgs bucket”! 😂
Gotta use a Hurricane cup for alfalfa pellets in my raised beds.😂😂
I guess the dog bucket is full of dog crap.
I’ve been using alfalfa pellets for more than 10 years – the results are always good. I add them to my furrows during planting. I even throw a handful into some of my houseplants.
