This week Our Japanese Garden Escape becomes a winter wonderland. Overnight we had a surprise snow fall and with it comes some specific garden maintenance that has to be done to address the snow. Many Japanese plants including Japanese Andromeda, Nandina Domestica and Rhododendron are brittle and can become badly damaged under the weight of the snow. Bamboo, being flexible is flattened rather than broken. This video looks at how we clean off all these plants to protect them and how we get the bamboo standing upright again.

  1. Great Video. I'm glad I don't see that kind of weather in Wales. Do you know you can buy sunflower hearts for wild birds! It comes without the husks and it means there's no cleaning up. We buy them online here in the UK but they come from Bulgaria which is much closer to you. We pay £40 for 30KG delivered (and we feed the birds all year) and buy it every 4 weeks. And because you're not paying for the husks you get a lot of seed. Over the years we have built up a large number of birds that call daily but no pheasants. In the past we have used many different types of seed but you get all forms of plants seeding in the garden. When we changed foods we were worried about the finches who always only ate the Niger seeds (they grow as a thistle). It made no difference they tuck into the sunflower hearts and their numbers increase year on year. It might be that there are suppliers online in Austria that can get you the seed from? Some of our regular visitors: Goldfinch, Bullfinch, Greenfinch, Blue tits , Great tit, Coal tits, Nuthatch, Woodpeckers, Collar doves, Wood pigeon, Robin, Thrush, Blackbird, Goldcrest, Wren and Jays, and we get the occasional visit from a Sparrow Hawk who takes the Collar doves for lunch.

  2. I just discovered your channel and your gorgeous Japanese garden. It looks like a true labor of love, but wow what an amazing space!
