In early October, Ed and I were contacted by the secretary for one of the community vegetable garden (allotment) sites we were on a waiting list for. A few plots had become available, and we were invited to join a group tour of the site. We signed the tenancy for our plot and recently received the gate key. I wanted to film a ‘before’ tour, for posterity, so that we can look back in months and years to come and see where it all started.

In the UK, it is uncommon to take over a plot in the community vegetable gardens which is in a good condition. Most plots become available because the previous tenant has lost interest or not had the time to invest in maintaining their vegetable garden. Ours is no different. Our allotment is by no means the worst or most unruly vegetable patch I’ve ever seen. We saw some plots that were completely covered in brambles and shrubs. Ours just has a lot of organic waste to clear, lots of weeds, and a few fruit trees and bushes that could do with a prune and shape. We’re lucky really, though there is a lot of work ahead of us.

Join me for a quiet, no talking vlog, where I work on the plot and show you what it looks like, as well as some of the tasks that lie ahead of us this autumn and winter.
