Pond volume without rock about 2000 gl. has two sections with six levels, five levels have a under gravel filter system, constant fresh water supply at about fifty gal. per day. The large section deep area has Sandstone over 8″ cylinder blocks with stacked flagstone on pond walls gives shelter for smaller fish and crayfish. No external filter or skimmers used although July and August with high heat and activity one is needed.
There’s many hours in this pond and its easy to fall behind the maintenance let alone upgrades and add-ons, but its a great hobby and everyone gets enjoyment from it.

  1. i have a pond project in my yard that is nearly complete and i want to do something similar to this with turtles and gamefish. I was wondering how a pond of that size supports that much life and also what i should put in it in terms of structure to provide habitat and shelter for the turtles and gamefish. please reply

  2. I think between the undergravel filters and consistent flow of fresh well water the support level it is what it is, although maxed out at that time. Most of my turtles eat and sleep in water but spend all day out of pond. I have staggered flat stone over 8x16x8 cinder blocks giving many small and large areas for life to hide and live, most of my fish love a log or root system for shelter, but bullhead, catfish, burbot, trout and most bottom dwellers like the rock and block shelter.

  3. I started this pond with small and juvenile fish, like the turtles fish were very social, happy and content, eating from the hand and always visible. I changed over to larger more aggressive fish like pike, bass ect. although cool at times the pond is now very unsocial, even larger fish are hiding and not visible. I may go back to the smaller fish and have only non aggressive large fish, the laid back spotted gar pike is a great larger fish for a pond eating only small minnows and looking good.

  4. How much money did it take you to build this? Its awesome and i always wanted a pond like this xD

  5. pump failure in a small pond with many fish etc. can be devastating, otherwise feed the smaller fish and they feed the larger ones, a establish pond will care for itself and life in it.

  6. How often do you put minnows in the pond? Is it big enough to get to a point where the minnows reproduced enough and you never have to add feeder minnows?

  7. Do you have any herbivorous catfish to control algae or do you just grow? And do you have and videos that put into perspective the actual size of the pond?

  8. This old Snapper has blue grey eyes, check out my turtle life in Dave's pond video for better view.

  9. Missed your comment somehow but song is oneness by Carlos Santana. I try to keep a school of minnows for looks also but if the bass get hungry they wipe out a school of minnows. lately I feed turtles and fish about 1/2gal. dead bait store minnows a week, including large snappers. Hair algae can grow crazy in summer and is over due for cleaning but I like keeping some on rocks I believe it really helps with bio filtration with current flow. Beginning of video shows perspective of pond.

  11. Snowsic – Does the spotted gar mind the colder water in the winter? Is he a Florida spotted gar? thanks

  12. I would love a pond like that. as someone else said you should have a live stream. Well done SNOWSIC best fish pond ever seen!

  13. I have been looking for an underwater camera for live streaming my koi pond with the capability of viewing on my laptop /computer. I was told that Go Pro will not live stream so what type of Go Pro do you have and does it live stream and can it be connected via usb,

  14. That is nice! My pond has a natural substrate with a couple pumps circulating it and I’ve had a couple long nose gar, Texas cichlids, large mouth bass, and red eared turtles. Now After 2013 I had tons of baby bluegill so I drained it and stayed with mosquitofish, Texas sailfin molly, Golden shiner, red shiner, ghost shrimp, bullfrogs, and a coppernose bluegill. I like how your pond is still 3’-4’ deep with rocks. I’m sure you probably used a liner and have a good filtration system? My pond is surrounded by 3 trees and plants. I have acorus grass, society garlic, and water Pennywort as bog plants. Plenty of varieties of algae along with a bunch of anacharis. It stays pretty clear other than when leaves accumulate and tannins show.
