This weekend we were preparing for our last round of freezing temps (hopefully) this spring and found something we didn’t even know we had!
We planted these broccoli and cauliflower transplants a while ago and forgot they were even there. When we were checking the garden for things to protect from the frost, we found them. And we’re so glad we did! Thankfully, we were able to harvest a couple baskets of broccoli and cauliflower before the frost could ruin them.
It’s amazing how backyard gardening can surprise you. Plants want to grow. Sometimes we overthink gardening when the best strategy is to just let them grow.

Its funny , listening to you saying 26 degrees being cold . Because we use c in ireland . 26 degrees is a good summer 🤣🤣
My sprouting brocoli did the same 😀
Oh and ILOVE THE TOP 😀
I would love a fig tree. Do you know if you can maintain a healthy fig tree in a container? I'm in zone 9b.
I’m also in 8b so I covered my potatoes before going to Vicksburg for the weekend. Unfortunately the wind blew half of my tarp off even with weights. I guess I’ll see if potatoes will bounce back, I know that they’ll pretty much ignore pest damage to the leaves.
I have a Q on ur green house did u ever think about a shade cloth bc I'm in the planning stages and would like ur opinion thanks!
Yes sir we still have snow on the ground up here it's still going to be a while till I can even think about gardening unfortunately.
Prevailing wisdom says that leggy plants are bad and for the most part that is true. However it isn’t true for tomatoes – I purposely try and grow leggy tomato plants because I subscribe to the “plant ‘‘em deep” philosophy. I’ve never tried planting them in a furrow because I want my roots down as deep as possible. You may want to plant some in a furrow and some in a deep hole just to get a comparison. You may have some issues with the furrow method since you don’t mulch. Those roots will be near the surface and when the heat comes, it may affect the plant health and vigor. Figs are looking AWESOME!! My wife loves figs and now that I have the room I will definitely want to buy some from you when they are ready. I learned a lot from the video you did on rooting, and I’m going to try my hand with that sometime soon.
Travis, what can I use for slugs? Purchased a new property in Oct moved in Dec noticed during cleanup of existing beds tons of snails 😓.
The horizontal method will take up a lot of soil surface area, maybe 8-12 ", so I just dig deep, vertically, and plant up to the bottom leaves. We have lots of wind, and even an F1 tornado that just missed us, thank the Lord. So much good food there, Travis ! Broccoli leaves are delicious and full of vitamins, too.
Yessir, lay them down and they’ll take off better than going deep. Those roots will be up in warmer soil and do great. I’m up in Minnesota and haven’t even started seeds yet. Can’t plant til mid may. I’m jealous of your seasons
Love your videos, would like to see more Hoss videos like this, the podcast are ok but not great, I did buy seeds from Hoss this year, had to save up for them, but I got the red snapper and Hossinator growing now. Pretty excited about that!
Hi Travis, we almost always plant tomatoes horizontal. Makes for a lot of roots not to mention the fact I get antsy starting seeds early and always have leggy transplants. I may try a new trick this year and lay the pots on their side a week or two before I plant. I'm thinking the maters should start reaching up and I'll have less chance of breaking the stem when I put them in.
I really like those deep pots you have the figs in. Where did you get them? I am a ways south of you but we had a freeze too; covered tomato and potatoes with cardboard boxes and they survived our 29 degrees. I thought the celery and rosemary would be fine but they got cooked; we shall see if it comes back.
You're going to have a feeding frenzy when you turn those fig cuttings loose. The begging and sweet talk has already begun. Lottery system? Queen For a Day type hardship contest?
Do you need live plant license to ship or sell locally too in Georgia? Want to sell some veggie transplants from home but I don't have a farm.Just a backyard gardener
Very informative, I truly want several fig trees. We live in Texas with NO BORDER , BUT I CANT BUY A TREE ?????
I've planted on their sides & did fine .
God bless you 🙏🏻 Josette Tharp Montgomery County, Texas 🙏🏻
I bought 3 peach trees from FastGrowingTrees in South Carolina 2 yrs ago , so why Can't we buy now ? OPEN BORDERS THO ?????
I did that last year on my tomato planting and they did fine.im in zone 8 b here in Alabama.
i do more of a 45 degree planting with tomatoes rather then a full 90 degree, digging the roots deep to start gives them a heads up on the deep water and mineral tap roots wile surface feeder roots form easily
I’ve used the horizontal method of planting tomatoes for 30+ years. I’ve never had any issues
We got a bunch of Tomatoes from the library last year and I used the laydown Technic and It could have been something else but had a lot of duds and failed plants too.
I purposely let my tomato plants get tall and leggy so that I can plant them horizontally, they grow an incredible root structure and I give them a couple of good handfuls of organic poultry based fertilizer a time of planting. I also put in my support cages at the same time. My tomatoes do beautifully every single year.
So happy I found your new channel. Had to do a google search on your butt to find ya! LOL. Missed your knowledge and personality. Love seeing more of the family.
I tried the horizontal planting method last year as well and it worked well! Awesome roots on your fig trees! I javelin some cuttings of some trees I'm starting as well
What do you recommend as far as inoculant to improve root growth in sandy soil? Have you tried it on any crops, if so, have you seen a benefit.
Where did you get the tall pots for your fig tree seedlings? Did you hav a video showing how you propagated them? I have a bunch of cuttings from pruning my giant fig tree.
The inventory plants look spectacular i sure would buy some I lived closer, Travis! I don't suppose you could mail me some?😅😅OOOH! i HOPE you got a fig variety I can grow! I have a Chicago Hardy, but hope to expand and get couple more cold hardy type. I am excited keep me posted!
I’m thinking of getting a baby greenhouse for seed starting. Do the plants have to be hardened off if they were raised inside the greenhouse?
That broccoli and cauliflower looks delicious.
Hey Travis. Those pots you have the fig starts in, them sure are some good looking pots. I’d buy some from ya, and listen, you don’t have worry about cleaning them out or nothing. I’ll clean them out myself. Just let me know know how much you want for some them pots. 😉
You don't harvest animals do you?? I can't handle that!!
I Have question I plan on planting corn my plot is bad about weeds I thought about putting a cover crop I have several mixes will it work
I jusy found you on Youtube……why did you leave Hoss Tools? Just curious….
My Dec seeded brocc and cauliflower was a little behind yours (also in 8b AL) and the heads were small enough to not be damaged by the late freeze but the cauliflower leaves sure died back. But as Gomer says "SUPRISE SUPRISE", I also had a decent, but small size harvest on both this Sunday!
I always plant tomatoes in a trench rather than super deep, because once I dig through about 8 inches of improved soil, I'm hitting pure sand here in Central Florida.
I've done the trench method before, and my tomatoes did great. They also did great with the traditional method as well. I couldn't tell much difference. But I went back to the traditional method because my shoulders couldn't handle making that trench. I was easier on me to auger a deep hole.
Like the video but that Patagonia fleece is really cool, distracting
