I planted some borage seeds on my balcony 2 weeks ago, and they are all sprouting! I'll have to thin them out as I didn't expect them all to germinate. I'm really looking forward to harvesting and eating them. I love the leaves lightly steamed and served with a little olive oil drizzled over the top and some pine nuts. Mmmm – delicious! 🙂
Unexpectedly got these seeds in a Wildflower Mix packet. Took 6 to 7 months to produce buds. Plus it was spiny. My wife and I didnt know what the heck this was until today. Was close to pulling it cause I thought I was taking care of a weed all this time. VERY CLOSE TO PULLING IT! My wife put it on Jake Mace's FB and found out from other subscribers! A Very beneficial plant.
Hi guys n galls. I'm thinking to introduce this and amaranth into my garden to attract lady bugs (lady birds). Can anyone comment on where they like to grow? ie. Do they like some shade? Full sun? do they like anything in particular, anything i should know before i choose a spot?
I like cooking the stems, leaves and bud cluster in butter and finished with a bit of garlic or an egg or two with cheese maybe. Start with the stems, they take longer. The hollow older stems stay somewhat crunchy but its like cucumber/celery in a way. Young shoots get tender and quite nice like asparagus.
About two years ago l read about borage in an herbs and spices cookbook and liked what I read. I tried growing borage as transplants twice and both times was very unsuccessful. This year l filled a large (6 gallon) flower pot with a soil blend and just planted the seeds straight in there. This time they grew wonderfully shooting out pretty little flowers that begin pink and turn blue. However by this time l had learned about borage so long ago l had forgotten their uses! Lol. Thanks for the recap.
Great information. Borage is easy to grow. I have been eating the tasty flowers and finally got up the nerve to try a leaf. I just didn't like the bristliness of them, but they were delicious! I thought they tasted like a cross between watermelon and cucumber. I chopped some up and added them to tuna salad for lunch.
In England we pronounce it in a way that rhymes with porridge. But since Americans call porridge oatmeal perhaps that explanation does not help much. I have encountered it as a child when in running about in the garden or countryside and yes it does not treat bare skin kindly, so I can sympathize.
I have borage in a planter…but it never seems to grow flowers…I seem to get the buds….there are some on the plants now but they don't seem to flower…what am I doing wrong?? 🙂
My borage opened its first flower today. Really tempted on eating it. But looking online it says the plant contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that are toxic. It discourages me from trying it. 🙃 whats your opinion on it?

Does draw the bees. I've always pronounced it to rhyme with porridge.
I have one of those growing in my yard, but you have to battle the bees to get to the flowers. They love that thing.

After it has flowered do you cut the flower stalk down ?
Will it put out a new stalk ?
I planted some borage about 2 months ago. They have become quite big. The bees love them. Which is great to see.
It great for mulch for your garden too. Easy to pull up, if you have too many.

No it's "bore age" but a lovely plant the greens are nice and the bees love the flowers.
Good for breaking down compost too.

Pronounce it like you want it still the same plant😂,That’s how I pronounce it. I love the Edible flowers and that it Replants its self.
Thanks for the info!
Thank you, now I have the confidence to try them — and I think they taste like cucumber!
