  1. I really like your plans for updating your vegetable garden area. We, too, didn't leave enough room between the raised beds. I would think a good mason would be able to repair the corner of your patio so it blends in properly and looks the same as the original patio. No one will ever know!! I've been thinking of putting a cloche over my lavender to help protect them over the winter. I covered some circular wire tomato cages with chicken wire, as my lavender are quite big. Actually, I am thinking of putting leaves INSIDE of the cloches to protect them, as in 6B New England, they sometimes don't winter over.

  2. Isn’t wood garden bed less hot in summer time and less cold in winter than medal garden bed? I have no experience in either of them, but want to raise the question to understand a little more of your thought process. Thanks for sharing!:)

  3. Can you swap out your wood on the earth boxes with trex ? We used it on our deck but I have seen boxes made of it. I think Jenny of creekside gardens has them on her back porch.

  4. I know how you feel on that patio project. I was told mine would get done in the spring and it is just now getting finished up! it has been all spring and summer a construction zone over here.

  5. Your boxwood looks like a cone boxwood I transplanted from a container last month. It reeeeeally bronzed. But it has biotone to develop roots, good mulch, and I have been watering it 2-3 times per week after the first couple of weeks. Here is to hoping it survives!

  6. Good morning. I removed my earth boxes as they were on my deck and I wanted to reclaim the space. On some level I miss them as they were so easy to water since I don’t have any drip irrigation. I replaced them with 18” metal garden beds and placed them on the lawn. Less lawn to mow! I may add 2 more raised garden beds early next spring. I am waiting for them to go on sale! I love your plans for the vegetable garden and look forward to seeing how it all turns out. Lots of hard work but quite rewarding.

  7. Are your dahlia tubers below ground level or above in the raised bed? They will probably make it if they are below ground level and mounded with wood chips or hay. The raised bed is like a pot and they will freeze. You are doing a great job developing your little patch of our Mother Earth. We learn by doing and from others.🎈❤🦋🙏🏼

  8. Your title reflects my day. I just wanted to get outside and sow some seeds and start fall clean-up. One of my veg beds was rotted and falling apart, SO I decided to go buy lumber to replace it. I contemplated for a good ten minutes whether I should just pretend I didn’t see it rotted. I went out to the big box store and it was a whole process to just find the type and size I needed. Of course, they won’t cut it for me now—even though they’ve done all of my 11 existing beds.🙄 Now I have to remind myself how to use my circular saw and make the cuts myself. I’m getting irritated all over again just writing this.😆 All of this went through my head in those first ten minutes after I saw the rot. One thing always seems to turn into another in my garden. I’m trying to keep my happy attitude I woke up with today.😬 Metal beds would be great! I may still be able to start clean up after I replace the bed and finish planting. Fingers crossed!

  9. Those taller containers will be great! After a back injury I realize I can't do what I used to. Sad but we all adapt to continue being outside in our gardens! 😊

  10. No fall veggies growing yet?
Wood painting is a cool activity, if you've got the leisure time to invest in…
If not, yep, metal ones should be opted for.

As for biggie projects, value the journey, not the destination!
I recommend you Cavafy's poem, Ithaca.

  11. At the being of your video in the background I see 3 trees that are growing pyramid shaped. I'm guessing the are some type of evergreen 🌲 pine tree, what is the name for them.
I have been wanting to plant about 5 or 7 behind our swimming pool area. I didn't want them to be like 50ft tall. I wanted something smaller maybe 20 to ft. tall.
Would really like something I wouldn't have to prune or shape, but would grow pyramid shape. Really enjoy your video's 😊🍁🍂

  12. I wish I lived closer so you can throw your plants and garden stuff my way!💡💡🤗🤗💡💡❤

  13. We all have dreams and visions of future progress in garden… Thanks Matt for sharing your’s sounds great however you have way way done so much in a short time and it all looks fantastic!!! 👍👏😀

  14. I know the cost would be substantially more, but have you considered using composite deck boards for the beds against the house, instead of metal? The aesthetic of your deck is gorgeous, and I wonder if metal would detract from that.

  15. Hi Matthew! First I want to mention that in my instructions for my purple hyacinth beans, it says to leave the pods on the plant until they are completely dry, then remove them, and either remove the seeds, or leave them in the pods until you're ready to use them. I've never pulled the pods before they are completely dry, so don't know how well they would dry after being pulled. I really like your idea for the vegetable garden. Since you like the idea of the earth boxes, would it be possible to either face them with metal, or replace the wood with some heavy duty metal like the Vego Metal Garden beds? It may save you a lot of time. Just curious if that might work for you. The South garden area looks fantastic! I like what you've done with it. Thank you so much for sharing!

  16. Yup…too narrow paths is such a common issue when putting in raised beds for the 1st time. It always seems like plenty of room until the plants fill in. I did the same thing my 1st time round…some of them were only 18" wide! Nowadays, I don't mind sacrificing grow space for wider paths. For my recent redo, I went to 3' wide paths…so much better!
