Nasturtiums are both edible and ornamental plants. Their shield shaped leaves have a peppery flavor, and their color-saturated flowers are also tasty. They come in a variety of shapes (bushy, trailing, and climbing), and the flowers can be both double (many ruffled petals) or single (simple flowers that are no less charming). There are even varieties with variegated leaves.

Got a bit of a shock by your suggested seasonal sowing dates till I realised you guys are in the southern hemisphere. In the UK, and probably the US, its a spring planing, summer flowering plant. But everything you said is spot on – these are some of the most giving plats out there.
ours wouldn't grow until we put it in rich compost black soil. Then it took off and it's huge.
