  2. Great information. I had a crook neck squash plant that gave me only one squash. As soon as I picked it, it exploded with growth and new squash! Seems like a similar principle, minus that the plant dies when the squash matures.

  3. Question, I grow silver slicer cucumbers a white very sweet variety. How can I tell if they are too ripe when they are white? If they get the least yellow, Im done for, right?

  4. My cucumber plant actually said that it hates my face and hates my family and gave me "the middle vine" as it killed itself on my fence.

  5. I feel like that doesn't make much sense. If we talk evolutionary wise, the cucumber plant is encouraged to make the MOST seed possible grow to maturity. If cucumber plants just got 1 cucumber to full maturity and then died, I feel like that would be as successful as a plant that grows and fruits and produces seeds until something kills it.
Idk, it could also be a fully maturing fruit cucumber was larger and too much on the cucumber and it succumbed to something that eventually killed it? Idk

  6. What makes my cucumbers only be in balls they don't create a long cucumber like they're supposed to although it is a pickling cucumber?

  7. I grew cucumbers last year and learned from experience the importance of picking on time. My cukes quit producing when I neglected harvesting them. I was busy, forgot and they just quit.

  8. Some varieties keep growing fruits if you remove the old cukes.
Crookneck summer squash take a vacation too, if you harvest too late.

  9. So if you want to save one for seed, do you wait until the vine is finished producing and let one of the last 🥒 cucumbers turn yellow and save that one for seed? Someone told me the seed should come from a mature, yellow cucumber

  10. 🌱A good God is behind the "plants' purpose" Quite amazing, really, to think about! And great info 👍 Just started seeing some fruit developing on my late summer cucs☺️

  11. I had no idea, thank you. Does the same tip about picking to keep up the fruit produced apply to zucchini and squash as well?

  12. AHA! For the information no one else has produced, I thank you and have subbed!

  13. Couple of issues. I have only female flowers so I assume it’s partheno whatever. The cukes are a nice dark green but have really sharp spiny things all over so I assume I should wait till those go away before picking. Hope that’s right. The other thing is that at one time there were lots and lots of nice flowers that seemed to have a fruit starting on each one; suddenly every single one turned black and dried up! I have been able to get a couple of cucumbers since then but only a couple and haven’t seen a flower since. Any ideas what May have happened? Am I right to wait to pick after spiny points are gone? Thanks. I’ve subbed and found your ideas helpful even for whatever zone I’m in (mid east Ohio across from Pittsburgh)

  14. Excellent info, I am in the raleigh area is there any chance if I got a cucumber plant in the ground now Id have a chance at a harvest before winter hits? I have the same variety of seeds with the Beit Alpha. Never grown any cucumbers before figured Id wait till spring, but who knows around here 🙂

  15. That was really informative! Can't wait to tell my Husband this, who is trying to grow his cucumbers. Good info 👍

  16. Picking was hard to do this year. At night I would say I'll grab that one tomorrow… The next morning that same cucumber would be the size of a baseball bat.

  17. All I have are flowers on my cucumber plants but no cucumbers. I heard male flowers come before females so maybe it will happen soon but it has been a while and no cucumbers just a lot of flowers

  18. I thought I might have lost one cucumber plant when I found a cuke with a yellow end at the base of the plant, after which it stopped growing or flowering.

But, with 'nothing to lose' I gave it a dose of organic potato fertiliser pellets which were well-watered in and now (a few weeks later) its growing and flowering again. Oh and with side shoots growing too I've had to place some brand new 6ft stakes in the ground around it.

  19. I live in Northern Indiana. I planted 3 separate plants and so far 2 out 3 are still producing. I think one of them I missed one and it's now done. Great advice. Thanks!

  20. I don't hear many people talk about cucumber plants only lasting 90 days. You're the first I've actually heard that from.

However, that has been my experience also since I've been growing cucumbers for a few years now. I live in Hawaii and can grow all year round, but I could never get my cucumbers to last a long time like my tomatoes. I figured that their life span isn't that long and have resigned myself to succession planting

  21. Do you have any scientific sources to support the assertion that producing a single botanically mature/fully-ripened fruit causes the plant to die? It looks more like your cucumber plant on the left has contracted CMV (cucumber mosaic virus). It looks like your plant on the right may also be developing symptoms, but isn't as far along.

  22. I'm growing a plant in a raised bed (over a part of the garden which was lawn) and today I picked four cukes from it. They are growing faster than I can eat them – with tomatoes I can put excess crops in the freezer for the winter, but what I do with too many cukes?
