John from http://www.growingyourgreens.com walks around a neighborhood in Los Angeles to see if anyone is growing food in front yard. See a home that left half of their lawn, but pulled out the other half to grow zuchinni and tomatoes.

  1. It will take off. Doesnt matter what side of the political isle or whether you a vegetarian or omnivore or even if you are a little skeptical of global warming science , edible landscapes and victory gardens make sense.

  2. We do grow food in our yard but a lot of times an HOA (home owners association) will prevent people from turning thier front lawns into a garden. We have done it even though we have to be sneaky and do it in a way that they won't complain about.

  3. @sweetdesigninc oh I wish our HOA would put in a community garden but that is not likely to happen even though I would be willing to pay a fee to participate!

  4. Ideas to get the general pubic to tear out some of their lawns?? Don't worry John, it will likely happen sooner or later out of necessity. Just keep some extra seeds on hand for your neighbors. That's what I'm doing.

  5. John, have you done any studying of the "Victory Gardens" following world war II that the Us encouraged via government? Might be a good model?

  6. I'm sure a lot fo those people are growing vegetable, but most people only grow it in their back yard, because they don't want the whole neighborhood and random passers taking all their harvest, lol. But I will admit, it is a nice, different look to see it in a front yard 🙂

  7. I hate lawns and I share your vids on Facebook. It's catching on, so don't be discouraged.

Recently subbed another YTer who called her garden her "Liberty Garden." Instead of the Victory Gardens of WWII, I thought it was very appropriate to call it a Liberty Garden because it liberates us from so many negative things to grow our own foods. Thanks for all the inspiration and all the time you spend making these vids. ☺

That's the robot from the 1951 "The Day the Earth Stood Still" WOW

  8. DOES ANYONE REMBER WHICH VIDEO JOHN TALKS ABOUT THE TWO TYPES OF TOMATOS ? HOW ONE HARVEST ONCE AND ONE HARVEST ALL SEASON ..WHAT ARE THESE TWO NAMES ?/ THANKS IN ADVANCE PEACE

  9. @jonathanhaslar thanks for the information thats what i needed to know. I use to have a lot of songs as well as educational information but i just recently deleted all of it to get a fresh start. you forgot to add me tho! I think its awsome how john get's distubred about no edable lawns!!!! PEACE

  10. Klaatu Verata Nicto. That's Gort from "The Day the Earth Stood Still"! Weird (or not?) that it/he would be growing in southern California. Where do I get some Gort seed? Love your show John!

  11. I have 10 acres of lawn or field whatever you want to call it.
If I was a better gardener I would work the land unfortunately the soil quality is not the best here and I have to figure out how to correct it organically. There has not been any pesticides or harmful chemicals used here ever. Last 25 years can guarantee it since that is how long I have had it.

  12. I am so proud of these people that "cut the grass" so to speak and plant edibles. When higher the class do this more will follow. One of the best things about growing outside the box is you meet your neighbors and others this way. I have had countless people stop to talk about what ever it is I am growing. Thank you for your videos

  13. Go to south centra Los Angeles, and you will see alot of front yard edible gardens alot of Hispanic immigrants still farm lol.

  14. I think the gangbangers would love John and welcome him to their own private gardens for some growing tips while listening to Dr. Greenthumb :0

  15. My neighbor was growing edible greens in the sidewalk like the last house in the video. He got the city inspector called on him. They made him tear it down yesterday. Im growing in my driveway and been thinking of tearing out some concrete. I will also start tearing out some lawn to grow in the front yard. And i will be growing plants for 2 of my neighbors to help and motivate them to start there garden. Im thinking of trying to start a community garden or vegetable and plant trading program.

  16. One neighbor who seems interested in growing vegetables offered me her yard to use as i please for vegetables. Another im still working on motivating to atleast start growing. And i have a few vacant lots in the area which would make great community gardens. I also noticed the high school 2 blocks away has a farm sort of. Could possibly ask if i would be able to grow vegetables there. I was inspired alot by jhon to grow beyond my driveway. It is my first year growing.
