Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart โ€“ to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Ok! I am Roryโ€™s age too! Love Gilmore Girls! Fall is the time to watch it!
My sisterโ€™s homestead is called Dragonfly station. After the dragonfly inn in Gilmore Girls. And one of her milk cows is named Sookie! Also the crocheting goes perfectly with Gilmore girls itโ€™s basically the starshallow knitathon. ๐Ÿคฃ

  2. Yes! Keep the 4th commandment. You can't get any work done with a dead battery in your tool. Plug into the Word, worship, prayer, journaling, creating art, or whatever you want to do to connect with the Lord and rest at his feet. Rest so that you can work. Love this vlog.

  3. I've tried so many times with radishes, which are one of my favorites, and they never do well. Right now all I have are greens and very skinny roots. I'm going to juice them I guess.

  4. I am right there with you sister! My husband has been a huge help in calling it to my attention when I need to slow down and crochet. It's taken me almost 50 years to actively participate in self care. If everyone else was ok, I was too. If I started something, I don't stop until it was done, including clean up. I might have spent the next week in bed, but it was done exactly how I wanted it to be. Now I recognize that done is better than perfect.

  5. It is so surreal to hear you have theses conversations about slowing down because finding your channel was my season of slowing down. I had a truly miserable pregnancy last year where I could not get out of bed most days and it was then that I found your channel. And I sat and watched years worth of your videos, one after the other and dreamed of getting out into the garden and being well again. But I knew that I had to rest, for me and the little one I was growing. So thank you for being that refuge for so many of us when we need it. You are truly appreciated and it is so lovely to know that you are appreciating yourself and respecting your needs. Sending love xKate

  6. What you were discussing is Biblical, as well. God labored six days but on the seventh He rested. He set the example. I said to my church family recently that I believe you can live better on ninety percent of your income having given a tithe to the Lordโ€™s work than you can on 100%. I think the same is true with time. I believe you can accomplish more in six and taking a sabbathโ€™s rest than you can working seven. If the God who made us in his image thinks we need a day or rest He is probably right. ๐Ÿ˜‡

  7. Daniel is a gift. He seems like he'd be enamored just to wake up in the morning.

  8. I really enjoyed this blog. The conversation was a wake up call for me. I am 73 and my husband calls me out too when I keep going.

  9. Bless you and Daniel's sweet souls. I just love his smile and his gentleness. Thanks for turning the camera on, lol.

  10. Thank you for sharring this conversation with Daniel. We miss him so much. Can't wait to see him on Youtube again.
    Keep up the good work
    God bless you

  11. Thank you so much for this message, very motivational โค๏ธ
Totally enjoyed that snack and nap blog, you are a wonderful writer Jessโ˜บ๏ธ

  13. Miah, taking the moment to tuck that climbing plant up where it's supposed to go โค๏ธ yes, brother. Yes.

  14. Love the come shell peas with me interview type of feel โค well to be honest I enjoy all your videos even your devotionals but I have to say this one was quite enjoyable as well

  15. Thanks for the porch chat on self care. I like the idea of quality relaxation time and making room for things that nourish us – like writing.

  16. Yeah, many years ago now I kept getting, be still and know that I am God, over and over. We did an experiencing God class and that's also what I got out of it. I STILL did not slow down though. I didn't realize it was God wanting me to slow down until I ruptured the lower disk in my back. sigh and that put me flat of my back for about 3 months, BUT in miserable pain for 6 months. I couldn't walk for 3 and I am just plain out miserable in pain. Nothing the Dr. gave me helped with the pain. That taught me a WHOLE lot, but like you I still struggle with progress and doing. I LOVE accomplishing things! Mary was doing what was right, but Martha was the doer like me. Now I have heart issues that make me slow down for sure. I actually thank God when I can really accomplish things now. So man do I "get it!!" I enjoyed you guys chatting and could tell you were rested just by how you sound. SAME here about watching more TV that I have in many years, but mine is Youtube! Not a fan of TV. Sometimes I just live through others (because my desire is to be outside gardening and I can't) watching you and others garden.

  17. Omgosh I am addicted to the Gilmore girls!! Lol. Especially on Sunday's or when I'm in the kitchen. โคโคโคโค

  18. So good to see Daniel on the farm again. Sitting on the porch steps shelling peas having a nice chat. I do most of my crocheting while watching all my YouTube homestead channels. Iโ€™m on my third baby blanket for the year and Iโ€™ve made several dishcloths and matching towels. All have been or will be given away as gifts. One day I will make a blanket for myself lol ๐Ÿ˜‚. Have a blessed day ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŒพ

  19. Love your times with Daniel. I needed to hear that itโ€™s ok to be intentional and do what I can when I can. Thanks you 2. โคโคโคโคโคโคโค

  20. I think it is from an old Beach Boys song, but here I go! Jess is in the Garden with the Chickens, and they are So Happy Together! Da da da da da, So happy together! Da da da da da! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

  21. It's so good to see Daniel, he's a blessing. I'm hoping he is completely healed from his accident of three years ago

  22. Hi, sweet Daniel friend. Two epically special people in one video…how wonderful!

  23. I live in New Zealand, I grow kiwifruit for a job which is our biggest horticultural export ๐Ÿ™‚ We use frost protection sprinklers above our plants, which turn on before a freeze (1-2ยฐC) if we get a late frost, the constant running water from the sprinklers stops the frost settling on our vines. And if it does, the water acts as liquid layer between the canes/buds/shoots, and the ice, preventing damage. I've always wanted to try sprinklers on my own garden to see if It works on Veges. But I'm always to fast asleep at 2am to go out and turn them on ๐Ÿ˜†

  24. I need to take the time to mentally rest. It's hard to do when my mind is constantly racing. I definitely need to be intentional with that.

  25. Hey๐ŸŽ‰ Daniel I didn't notice your Blonde hair was gone under your Cool Hat you look great ๐Ÿ‘Š.
It's nice too see you again.
We had what they called a Teen Phone. It was our own line handed down. We couldn't use it until we made money enough too pay for it!
We had six Girls and the ones that paid for it would freak if they caught you in it LMBO .
    Enjoy your time ๐Ÿ’Ÿ.

  26. My grandparents were sharecroppers in south Georgia, and they had six rocking chairs on their screened-in front porch. From the time I was little, when you went to their house in the summer, you sat on the front porch with an enamel pan and shelled peas. You just rocked and shelled peas with grownups and kids together. We kids always wanted to snap more peas than we shelled, and granny would gently encourage us to actually SHELL them instead. My fingers would get sore after awhile. I still remember the feeling of running my fingers through the shelled peas after I had a good amount. A pan full of shelled peas is a very good feeling.

  27. We once had a home across a pond from a neighbor's cattle pasture. We heard calves bellowing all night at times due to weaning so yes it is hard to hear. By the way Kaye Kittrell who has the "Late Bloomer" site here on YouTube, was occasionally a guest Actress on "The Gilmore Girls" TV series. She is recently a small homestead owner, having moved back to TN a couple of years ago from Los Angeles.

  28. My father grew up on a farm during the great depression and told us many stories of that time to us as children. One was of my aunt milking the family cow named Bossy because she was Bossy. Aunt Maxine was milking when Bossy decided to move, and step on her foot. About the time my dad arrived at the barn, Maxine who was 6, was shoving on Bossy's hip yelling, "Bossy, get off my foot! Bossy get off my foot! By then Dad and Grandpa were there and shoved Bossy off of my Aunt's foot. I thought you would enjoy that story. Love and hugs, Zanna

  29. Life got in my way for a time and I had to leave your channel. I'm back now. I have been wondering about Daniel. It's really wonderful to see him again. I love shelling dried peas. You can solve the world's problems while shelling peas.

  30. My Dad was taught to crochet by my Grandmother when he had the Flu and was a young child. During the depression, they saved every scrap of fabric they had and made rag rugs that were hand crocheted with hand-carved wooden crochet hooks made of wood! I grew up walking on some of these rugs, and my dad actually taught me how to make them!!! Pretty cool! Love and hugs, and to Daniel as well!

  31. Cows are upset that you took their peas ๐Ÿคฃ Ha.. Ha.. Cow peas..
    ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  32. I loved that you shelled peas on the stairs, a high traffic area & we got to experience real life with you, Daniel & your sweet family. Daniel is sooo peaceful. I really enjoyed the conversations that went on! โค๏ธ

  33. My 12yo has asked me more than once to stop talking to kids her age as if I've known them forever b/c apparently it's creepy ๐Ÿ˜† Sorry kiddos, that's just what happens in a small town. I likely know your parents, and maybe even your grandparents.
