Container gardening is a great way to grow plants, vegetables and herbs without needing a lot of space. Herbs do especially well and can be grown right outside your kitchen door. In this video, you’ll learn how to use an old farmer’s market basket to make a great container garden. Fill it with your favorite herbs and your cooking will be full of flavor all summer long.

Beautiful container? xD
Mint is very fast-growing and will take over that whole container if you don't cut it back often.
This was really helpful. Thank you!
hm…I don't think I will take any gardening -tips from you… this sounds really toxic to me
Q. The weather is going to be humid in my area for the next week, I had just replanted my plants to give them more room so they were already in shock. My plants have started to look under the weather so I brought them in side thinking it was the 90* heat killing them. But since it was humid when I watered the they didn't dry out the next day so I stopped watering them. How do I take care of my herbs in humid weather? They are already dieing! Help!
@RiddleTales The weather where I live is REALLY humid so that doesn't bother them. When you transplant, don't do it in the beating sun, and keep them in the shade for a day or two to get their strength back. And when you transplant especially in the heat that you have, they will wilt a bit. As I mentioned, move them in a shady spot for a bit – don't over water – and see if that helps. Let me know! @RiddleTales HI me again. I did what you said, and that saved them-ish. They had already taken a lot of damage so they were very slowing going out the door. Then the squires came by and just dug them up. Guess I just need to start over now.
Have you grown Herbs indoors over the winter like Basil, Thyme and Sage ? Any quick tips on doing it successfully.
@9aspengold5 Yes, they work well if they have a lot of light and air circulation. Once they get established, don't overwater as that's what usually kills indoor herbs. Basil can be started from seed; thyme & sage either from seed or small plants. Also try chives from seed. Rita from AboutEating. com
@RecipeCook thank you Rita. I grew Herbs for the first time this summer and they were absolutely so much better than store bought. I used your recipe for pesto and now have plenty of little containers in the freezer. The parsley mixed with Parmesan cheese freezes so well and tastes so fresh. So I will try to grow some this winter. Thank you again. marcia
She's so cute!!! The diapers are whack as it gets (sorry).
I enjoyed your video. I'm going to grow herbs in containers this spring, mainly to attract butterflies. I will probably plant borage, basil, fennel, milkweed, dill. I've heard that borage is one of the best for attracting bees.
@GoingOrganic1 As far as I know borage and Phasilia are great for bees. They just love blue flowers it seems.
Nice clip,
I used to grow acres of mint, love the herbs. They really are great medicine.
Nice job on the video. Someone tuned me into this weed killer tool that is extremely useful and affordable, check it out – weedcaneDOTcom
WIll do later today.
WIll do later today. Oh and for Beca, I would wait until they get a bit larger before thinning out. The ones you thin out are great in salads, stir friees, etc.
@NJGardengirl1961 Oh wow. Well organic gardening all the way 😀
You can plant herbs in containers closer than you would in the ground since you may be harvesting them sooner due to the fact that you control how much sun, etc. they get. You'll have to fertilize and water a bit more, though. The spacing is a personal thing – I use the French Intensive Method in my in-ground herb garden. Everything's close together so it chokes out weeds.
It is getting warm enough here in Colorado to start getting gardens going. Usually, not till after Mothers Day to avoid frost damagae.
It is almost getting warm enough here in Colorado to start gardening. We usually plant after Mother's Day to avoid a late frost. I like to use a raised garden as it is easier to get to and maintain.
We've had so much rain here in Ohio but I still managed to get a lot of my herbs that wintered over in the garage into the ground. Mother's Day is the official day here.
Glad you like it. Just poke plenty of holes for good drainage and you'll have great tomatoes.
I stopped watching as soon as she said Miracle Grow.
…this doesn't look like a good idea, diapers i assume aren't exactly food safe, the white stuff just sounds dangerous, and the "soil" is basicly falling out of the basket…i mean this looks very nice, but it just seems like a diy superfund project
That is so cool. I live in an apartment and have only a backporch balconly and front porch landing. This is perfect for that. Thank you so much.
What's an 'Urb'?
I think you're right. I probably could have added a bit more. It's not easy to container garden on camera 🙂
I am trying makeing compost and worms rather than buying soil, the good potting soil is expencive. Plus its fun learning new ways to grow. I am also learninf to clone trees, figs, peaches ect. grapes. try to get a grape seed to sprout in calif.
… That's how it's pronounced.
True, great video. Fresh herbs are a must for any great cooking,
Exactly…
;0)
good idea with the diapers…I hve never seen that before!
I wouldn't want the man-made plastic of those baby diapers leeching into my food.. would rather water every day.
Thank you so much! This video is very helpful! I can't wait to start!
And those beads are made of polyacrylamide which we used in Biochem class at University. We were warned that it was toxic to humans and not to breath in the powder as we made gels with them for separating DNA
Thanks for the tips

Miracle-Gro Potting soil or … Miracle-Gro is also owned by Scotts, which is a HUGE supporter of Monsanto. If you want to eat poison get your produce from store.
Super! Thank you!
Today's potting mix is available in a Moisture Control formula, no need to use the diapers. The finished herb garden at the end was nice looking.
I recently discovered Simply Love Gardening (just google it). it had everthing that i needed in one place
