    Batavia, I love your approach to gardening—giving back to nature, finding space for two more zucchini and welcoming the volunteer plants. There are definitely some life-lessons to be learned in your happy garden! I lost two squash plants to the dreaded vine borers last week and spent a few days inspecting and hand-picking them from the plants. I haven’t seen any in several days. Keep vigilant. Hey, I love those Purple Cherokee tomatoes!

    Why do you have the watermelons in netting? I have some watermelons growing in my garden and I am wondering if I need to do the same thing

    Companion plant white icicle radishes around the squash/cucumbers/zucchini "hill." That will deter a lot of the vine borers (keeps them out of the vines/stems, but if they eat the leaves it may not prevent some leaf damage and/or loss), and it may help with stink bugs, too. I expect you're familiar with Louise Riotta's "Carrots Love Tomatoes" book on companion planting, but thought I'd mention it in case some of your subscribers are unfamiliar with it. Her companion planting advice made my home gardening into a completely different game.
