Natural edges are the the best way to separate the lawn from mulch beds and look absolutely fantastic when done correctly! Here is how I do it using a cheap and simple tool!

  1. If I spend so much time on the edge alone when I am going to have time for the other things in the garden?

  2. Will you put weed barrier cloth down before the mulch? I'm a bit usure of when that's necessary.

  3. 1:24 If you had grabbed my edging tool like that you would have drawn blood. 🙂 I put a very sharp edge on my edging tool. Makes it cut a lot better.

  4. Is that half-moon tool not meant to be rocked when cutting and moving laterally? Hence the shape?

  5. No wonder you have to reshape your lawn edge every year…live edge, that’s what you’re gonna need to do. Period! You can stop pretending the mulch and the edge will stay as is throughout the year…not gonna happen!

  6. Looks like an L shape to me, not a V shape. You can make the V shape using that kind of edger just by aiming straight down, then pulling back on it. That way, you do have slightly exposed soil to keep grass from encroaching, BUT you don't have that artificial-looking big gap, which is not natural-looking at all.

Grass grows 4-5 in. down, so you need to make sure, as he says, to cut that deep with the edger. Home Depot sells one with a serrated edge, which helps.

  7. Currently 431 comments and not a single one talking about the “pull-out game” comment… I’m impressed 🙂

  8. Great job! I need to fix my edges and you made this look easy. I'm excited to get out and give this a go. Thank you for the video,

  9. Thank you. I like that look way better than pavers, too, but I didn't know how to get it. Thank you. Now, I wonder will I be working toards kind of a moat around my existing garden bed, or will I actually be lowering the actual bed, 'cause right now (before trying your technique), my gardening bed is same level as the grass.

  10. Looks fantastic. I like it so much better than ANY type of edging. Bricks, rocks, whatever, always get grass and weeds growing in or over them and it's hard to get out. Thanks for showing how it's done.

  11. Will the rain and wind not carry the mulch in to that 4 inch ditch? In the fall, it seems like leaves could fill the space as well.

  12. I have more work to do. Thank you for this great information. 👍🏾

  13. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, CRISP EDGES, GREAT VIDEO, THANKS!

  14. This is perfect . Thank you and for free . Minis tools ect . I'm going to check your videos on how to Make a straight line to make a flower bed outlinr in to turf that's already there

  15. I've been doing this for years and love it. The tough part is cutting in when you have lots of big tree roots. It's a lot of work but it is still worth it in the long run.
