We grew five different varieties of carrots in our backyard garden this fall and winter. While all of them did fairly well, some varieties stood above the rest. Join us to see which carrot varieties were our favorites and which ones we probably won’t keep as a part of our backyard gardening plan.

We’ll also be checking on our plot where we recently added the alfalfa pellets to see how it’s doing after the heavy rains. And lastly, we’ll check on our seedlings in the greenhouse and plant some okra seeds so we can have an unofficial germination test on this one particular heirloom okra variety.

  1. I'm trying Napoli this year good to see you like them I purchased my seeds from Territorial seeds also trying Uzbek golden free seeds from Baker creek never heard of them but I'm trying them anyway also have Amarillo from Baker creek I like but they are 3 years old not sure if they are still viable

  2. Did you do a video on kraut making? I’ve been wanting a basic recipe. I also will watch for your opinion on this new kraut recipe also. I’ve never made it homemade but want to add it to my pantry.

  3. I to don’t have very much luck with growing carrots. This year I’m planting them different. I got some sand and compost to mix with my clay soil and I planted them around 10 days ago and I have the best germination ever all of them are up and doing awesome. Great video thanks again for sharing

  4. Polish sauerkraut sounds DELICIOUS.
Please say/spell out the seed company for the Miami carrots. They look like picture book carrots. Thanks. I love your attitude about our miserable southern weather -> it’s been great for the carrots! Keep smiling !

  5. Yay! LSU tiger figs! Gotta get me some!!! (Gotta support my ol’ school!). (I’ve got two rooted cuttings each of Gold & Purple that are doing nicely.)

  6. Beautiful carrots, my fall garden didn't fair well this year, except the bunching onions. Hooked up the tiller on the tractor this afternoon and made one pass, getting ready for tater-time!!!! Thinking about purchasing a heated mat this year, never used one.. ✌

  7. It's nice to watch your trials since you grow a wider variety of a particular plant than I will. I liked Bolero. Still kind of working on my carrot growing methods. Mainly when to start them. Since I only grow them for the fall, it's a slow process. 🙂

  8. Bolero is our favorite carrot to grow. So good! Oh, that Polish sauerkraut looks interesting, I'd love the recipe!

  9. I always plant Nantes; however, I don’t know which variety of Nantes.(?) I always thought that Nantes was the variety. Thanks for educating us.🥕

  10. I purchased some alfalfa but got cubes instead of pellets and didn't get organic. Do you think that will be a problem or should I return and get organic pellets?

  11. Travis, awesome videos. I have really enjoyed them. We’re did the greenhouse come from?

  12. Carrots looked great! My 8 year old planted and faithfully tended his first crop of carrots this fall. He's decided he's now the carrot expert and is about to start his next round of planting. He grew Kuroda and Little Fingers varieties. Looking forward to your new recipe and fig cuttings becoming available. Happy gardening!

  13. I grew three varieties of carrots this year purple elite, Yellowstone, envy. Think I like the Yellowstone the best, not at the others were bad. Will keep an eye out for those okra seeds lol I had cut my okra back ,a couple months ago and still need to pull the stalks up. Noticed last week they were actually flowering…

  14. I live in Pickens County South Carolina would like to know when to plant English peas. What temperature should the soil be so they could germinate. Hey I like your videos.

  15. Last Weds. we came close to losing this here Titus, had an un-detectected massive and couple smaller lower duodenal Ulcers that let go, caused massive internal bleeding, started by throwing up huge amounts of Blood, by the time I got to the emergency room had buckets of it coming out the other end, by that time had lost about a gallon and a half, almost didn't make it, we had the biggest ice/snow storm in years and the wife couldn't get there, thought I'd never see her again. The ER crew worked their butts off and was able to slow it down, spent the next 4 days in critical care, wheeled into surgery to close up the ruptures, they managed to fix that, spent the rest in a delirium with all kinds of drip bags to promote blood production, had to pump 2 big bags of blood back into me. Was able to go home late Sunday. Am recovering nicely with a very limited diet (some of those Veggies are off limits).

  16. So I normally just grow Scarlet Nates in the fall and they do well here. This year I tried Kuroda Shin and Thumbelina . They did not do as well as my Scalet Nates. They did not hold as well and were not as sweet. I plan to try them again this spring along a rainbow mix — not sure the type in them, but thought it would be fun. When I liveed in Abq, NM I use to be able to find sauerkraut with caraway seeds (bavarian style) in store. I really liked it but can't find it anywhere here.

  17. I grow Bolero every year. I pressure can our carrots and Bolero cans really well, I understand that a lot of commercial carrot processors use it. I like the Nantes shape of carrot the best.

  18. My experience with fig cuttings and you might want to double check this though but they usually start producing leaves before roots. I use a clear tote and wet newspaper or paper towels to wrap the cuttings and leave the bottom and first noad exposed to form a callus.
If the cutting putts on too many leaves before good root development it essentially drys itself out. Once I see roots then I transfer to a pot.
With the high humidity in the greenhouse though the leaves probably pull moisture out of the air or by misting the leaves might help.
Do you have to get a license to sell plants in different states because I tried to order some tomato plants from totally tomato and they couldn't be shipped to georgia?
I wanted to try some of their grafted tomato plants, I still have some rootstock seeds from when I have done this before but they are expensive and it's time consuming. I might try using the red snapper, roadster, dixie red or mountain fresh as a root stock sence they have pretty good disease resistance. I'm curious what will happen if you put a indeterminate heirloom on a determinant rootstock. From what I read it should be fine.

  19. First round of carrots got smoked by a bad frost.. So I concentrated growing a stellar Mustache instead.. Know what I mean Trav!

  20. you have been going with the agrithrive on the starts, man i dont put fert on them usually in the seed tray. Is that cause of the paper that showed all the root development ?

  21. Excellent video sir! Your carrots look great! Looks like your planting with a Jang? What rollers are you using? I’m dropping too many with the X24 roller. (I’m planting raw Mokum)
