This is a great time during this winter period to start planning for the Garden, we will be planning our right now and hopefully will have a Great big garden full of flowers and yummy food for our family! Love the chickens!
Oh boy! I've been searching for channels that feature more chickens. Being a new chicken owner, I love to see what others are doing and experiencing. I have five 20-week old chickens who have not laid any eggs quite yet. Mine don't love the snow either but they want OUT more than avoiding the snow.
My solution for the freezing water was to put the water in a bowl and then put the bowl in another container with shavings/straw in it. It wasn't a perfect solution but it seemed to keep the water fluid a little bit longer. 🙂
Love to see the leaves in for the chickens! This may be old news, but each fall when folks in the city rake up leaves they leave them on the curb a day or two before the city picks them up. I collected over 100 bags of yard waste and add it periodically to my run. It eliminates the mess you experience and attracts earth worms who enrich the "Compost" as the chickens tear it down. Mine is about 12" deep right now and equals somewhere around 60 bags. I also recently have been adding them to the inside of the coop and mixing it into the wood shavings. It gives a wonderful aroma to the coop and the chickens love to dig through it, further breaking it down and mixing the poop into it. Gives them something to do in the winter if the run is full of snow. Toss a little grain on the floor to encourage them to dig for it. As a bonus you get all the refuse bags to use for your liking. I have been trading some folks the bags for other goodies, as they're pretty expensive and the people giving you their yard waste will actually save their leaves for you. Use some caution though, it is possible to get waste that has been treated. I kinda watch the yards to see if they've treated them, so as not to put the chickens any harms way.
