All Japanese maples are interesting year round, but Acer palmatum ‘Sango kaku’ is radiant in the garden. Commonly called coral bark Japanese maple (sango kaku means “sea coral tower”) it reaches 20 feet by 15 feet over 10 years in the landscape, or 10 feet by 5 feet in a container.
Zones 5-8.
Fall: yellow-gold
Winter: stem color intensifies
Spring: pink-tipped, yellow-green leaves
Summer: subdued color but still a beauty
