Just as the pandemic hit, Sophie Ashby and her husband, the fashion designer Charlie Casely-Hayford, moved into an early 19th-century house in Spitalfields. It was a rental–an opportunity to enjoy more space than they had in their small flat in West London, and a stop-gap before buying a house of their own. Rather than being frustrating as an interior designer–indeed, House & Garden’s current Interior Designer of the Year–and restricted by the limitations of what you can do to rental property.

‘Actually, I found it really liberating’, she says. ‘I didn’t have to worry about any of the architectural framework of the building. It had already been made beautiful so I was able to come in and fill it up with beautiful things.’

  1. This is eclectic done well. I often see a lot of these “maximalist” homes and even watching them via video gives me a headache. But I felt so calm and at peace watching this. Absolutely stunning and bursting with character and depth. Bravo!!!

  2. Perfect, so lovely, "scrumptious" (someone said below), and just the kind of place to re-kindle interest in decor.
& I could listen to her speak all day.

  3. I would love to know some of the photographers art who featured? some really stunning photographs

  4. It is not difficult to see how she became Designer of the Year. Each room has an ease to it…. and ithe style of Kitchen is something that I am longing for, before Islands became a thing…. a bit vintage. The energy the designer emanates and intermingles with the atmosphere of the home, the kitchen and bathroom pervades the film in very special way. Someday, maybe we as a team could get to meet her…. have that sense that our creative energies could collide beautifully.

  5. I hope whoever owns the house appreciates what Sophie’s done & how wonderful she enjoys bringing up her family here. Sophie has some fabulous ideas.

  6. I'll probably watch it another 10 times to absorb all of this home's beauty and warmth.

  7. Seems I’m the only one in this commentary section who does not love this home! Too haphazard and all over the place for me.

  8. This is weird af, I wonder what she does to help the black people of South Africa people instead of hanging a bunch of photos of black folks. The history of white people and apartheid in South Africa is one of the worst tragedies of humanity, jacking off to photos of black folks is not enough.

  9. Beautiful house and hectic colors atmosphere 🙂

But please someone tell her that if you had so many useless yet beautiful things like thousands of chairs you never sit, it has nothing to do with sustainability, ok? It’s just about you being shamelessly rich and young and tasteless a little bit 🙂

  10. Lots of textures and colours but with cohesion. Nothing clashes and while it’s maximalist, it is certainly not cluttered. No issue cleaning and dusting this home! It’s lovely!

  11. I’m so blown away by everything about this home and the family that inhabits it. There’s so many treasures to be seen, no video would be long enough!

  12. I saw pictures of many of these rooms in the past and always saved them on my wall, now I now that I adore the whole house

  13. In later videos you can see her evolution. Gets much more nuanced and unique which I much prefer. It’s Much less in your face. But she is bold and brave.

  14. Is anyone able to identify the art work by the door of her office? To her right at :10 and then on left of the frame at :20!
