Container Gardening, Raised Bed Garden, Shipping Cardboard Box and Totes, now Grow Bags. It may be a challenge to do fabric cloth grow bags, but I will see how this works out. Let ‘s see what works out best, after all, grow bags are about $4 and Totes and buckets are just a bit more.
This is TULLE that Great Fabric SO CHEAP and last all year outside here, here is an aff. link to check out, many colors, I usually get one of the greens, but any color will work great: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5575376117&toolid=10001&campid=5338267736&customid=&mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FTulle-Fabric-Bolt-54-X40yds-Wedding-Bridal-Party-Favor-Decoration-Tutu-Craft%2F381670793265%3Fvar%3D650737116165

I haven't seen you for so long Robbie even though I pressed the bell for notification – so I guess I've got a lot of catching up to do : ) Maybe that's not such a bad thing as I can watch your videos from the cooler months (I know, I can anyway : ) ) now that Autumn is here in S Australia – but we did have a very pleasant Summer without those horrible heat spikes that we usually get. Nice to see you again Robbie. X
I live in Tucson where the temps get upwards of 110 consistently in the summer. I love my grow bags! I am going on year three with the same bags. It depends on the quality of the bags as far as success rate goes. I cheaped out the first year and I hated them!! Now I get 10 gallon bags and the material looks thicker and sturdier than the ones you are showing in your video. I have no trouble moving the bags around and I’m over 60 years old. I grow tomatoes and all varieties of peppers in mine. Don’t have to water every day. As for the animals, we have prairie dogs and ground squirrels and I put out carrots for them and they have left my garden alone. Not knocking plastic, just sharing my experience with grow bags.
Last year I bought some large grow bags but after a few months of growing potatoes I saw the fabric around the bottom was spotted with black and green – mildew or mold, not sure which? I was concerned the potatoes wouldn’t be safe to eat and I couldn’t find information on this problem so I threw them all away.
I grow carrots and greens in Growbags. I plant and forget. I trim out beet greens at least every 2 weeks. I am on year #5. I live "down the street" from Gary and Bobbie… In SocaliUSA. Zone 9b
I use cloth & vinyl grow bags. I live in Darwin, Australia. I use a water system on timer. You made good point about loosing water seeping out. In the past used bucket with holes like your totes. They were on the dripper system water loss was minimum. Might go back to buckets.
Robbie, I can understand your explanation about grow bags. I only using colorful grow bags for my herbs and potatoes right now (it doesn’t get excruciatingly hot here but I still water them every 2 days and so far their good to go. To me, grow bags are only good to use if you’re growing plants that don’t need much sunlight and can be placed in shade because the sun won’t dry them out as much….I am going to move my small 3gallon grow bags to the other side of my yard I have setup because it doesn’t get much sun and it’s on the west side of the house under trees. I see that some people use kiddie pools and shallow dishes to keep moirture in their bags and I think that’s a great idea as well, but yes you may want to stick with your totes and containers Robbie lol; I can see you using your grow bags for harvesting foods and maybe growing foods on your deck in a “shaded area” that doesn’t get much sun, or maybe something to carry around with you when you’re pruning and picking up trash, leaves, small branch’s, etc…
Great video..I bought a bunch of 30 gallon grow bags and love em far better than plastic buckets. This spring I planted potatoes in 20 of them yes add extra Pete moss for increased water retention
I think grow bags are only good for sweet potatoes and potatoes cuz u don’t need to water them so much. So I’m thinking all my tubers plant planted in grow bags 👍👍♥️♥️♥️😊 cuz u mentioned they get dry easily. Thanks for sharing this info 🙏🏻👍👍♥️
Grow in whatever you are successful in and once you become pro gardener you can grow anywhere.
Some people do a small pool of water then set the grow bag. Just enough water to set the grow bags in.
Being from Texas I agree on the water being about 12" in totes. Being that it's hot in Texas, I want moisture to be on bottom of my containers. Those bags wouldn't work in our state. Just saying.
I've used them. They dry out very fast in the summer months so I don't care for them for my tomatoes. I'm building my totes gardening.
Thank you for the review. North Central Calif is dry as well. I have several grow bags. They work well for winter. The summer gets too hot. I will try using the clear plastic water trays used for house plants to protect furniture, placing them in the bottom of my 5 gallon bags and larger. This will give a small water reservoir in each bag. I was going to place bags in tubs or kiddy pool, but water evaporation would be high. Hoping small reservoir inside the bag will not evaporate as fast and provide ability to grow in summer.
I grow in pots like yours use 20% manure and coco fiber in Fla 9b use wood mulch 2 inches pea gravel under pot . coco fiber holds moisture
There’s a saying from another fellow gardener that I love: Advantages are not always advantages and disadvantages are not always disadvantages. I can see how grow bags may not be the best option for hot climate growers, especially if you are using the cheaper, thinner grow bags. I live in upstate NY where we get a lot of rain. As a small space gardener, I have found grow bags to be my favorite containers to grow in. They drain well, they are easy to move, even when fully planted and my plants never get root bound. I personally like the Root Pouch brand grow bags because they are a thicker, tougher material than the cheaper ones I have bought in the past from Amazon. Plus I can buy them now from my local farm stand rather than online. Of course, if you are handy with a sewing machine you can make your own. Sadly, I am not handy with a sewing machine but if I was I think it would be a lot of fun to create my own bags. 😊
I have 20 gallon grow bags that I've planted bell peppers in. I water twice daily in summer and since its been in 70s and will be until end of May. So I only water once in mornings. I water deeply.
I have a question..I am a very beginner..which of your videos would you suggest I start with ? I love the container method..I can't squat so I need them to sit up higher…I love your videos…just need some direction how to start. I have some tomato plants and a few other veggies…thank you…
Love your channel so excited for your info always to the point and clearly explains everything. I love your fountain and hummingbird posts
I have potatoes growing in dog food bags.
I have 20 grow bags (3 gal), 10 large totes, & 10 boxes. My totes are by far the best. I put 5 worms in each grow bag with the lasagna method. The soil is extremely rich and black now (3 months later), but I had to water wick each grow bag with a garbage bag. Hard to regulate dryness here in Arizona. Either very dry or too wet with the bag. Tomatoes seem to like the bags.
Unless you use a self watering bottle with a clay or ceramic draining bottle
I have a question….is it okay to purchase earth worms and put them in your bags?
also, unless you have the grow bag in some sort of plastic saucer, you can't direct the water when it seeps out the bottom and sides, like you can when you put your side holes strategically in your bins and buckets and put a bucket under them to catch that water, which is also full of nutrients from the plant parts breaking down in the bottoms of your containers.
Seems to me.tou loose the nutrients malso
I lined mine with a cardboard box…
I have the 20 gallon grow bags in my garden I live in central Texas I’ve had mine in the garden for 5 years and there still going strong and I do move them by the handles
Here we are, in north texas just north of Dallas. Been watching TP2 and gardening with leon. Trying grow bags 10 gallon and they fit perfectly in oil change trays from Walmart. It will be interesting to see how it works. Just got 10. Got 16 of 18 gallon tots and 30 mineral tubs from farmers to make wicking tubs(they do great here)
Why didn't you put the grow bag in your bins like the other pots?
I live in dry So Cal. I put my grow bags in kiddie pools and periodically add a few inches of water. Bags suck up all the water within a few hours so no standing water
research Larry Hall you tube channel for great info on growing in bags in a kiddie pool…save water and grow excellent plants.
My Roma and Peppers will soon need to be transplanted so I figured with a 5 gallon bucket being less than $2.47 a piece I could pick up the 7 I need, and boy was I shocked at $4.98 a piece. Is there any way cheaper as I have plants coming up so in a couple of weeks, to three, I need to get them in a larger medium?
Sounds perfect for our rainy season in Florida. I would get white ones though so they don't get too hot in the sun.
Self watering. 💞
Where in California do you live? How much property do you have? Are you in the country or city? I live in garden grove California in the city and grow in buckets, totes, and grow bags. Will see how they all do. Have hummingbird feeders too but only get a couple birds around. Nothing like you. Wow!
Thank you for this review. We get very hot here in the Midwest. Watering 2x a day isn’t my thing.
I have grow bags but it’s like a tarp and it has holes around it and I put it on top of pallets and just leave it there and water them everyday, it has sweet potatoes and sunflowers thank you for the tips Robbie 😊♥️👩🌾👍👍🌟🌟🥒🥬🥦🍑🍑🥕🫑
