I share with you what I feel has to be the easiest, least expensive, most productive, expandable bucket gardening system. By following this system you can start with a single plant and expand your garden to unlimited number of plants that always get just the right amount of water through this self-watering system. You simply “plant it and pick it”.

  1. I wanted to thank you for your videos.  You gave me the info I needed to get my own container garden set up.  Finished it this weekend and it's off and running.

  2. Brother Thank you for this channel, have you tried using cloth wicks? Why do you think the black pot system wick is better?
    Thank you.

  3. Wow….so many complaints. I thought it was a nice idea. Those of you who are rude about this video should just turn it off or don't try it. He did not hold a gun to your head or tell you that this is the only way to garden…. maybe YOU should make a video if you're so smart. Or maybe try being a little more mature about your comments.

  4. I appreciate the effort it took to produce this video, but painting the inside of the growing bucket does seem to defeat the purpose of finding a food-grade plastic bucket.  It would be best to keep the paint above the soil line in the bucket.

  5. I love the way you have adapted the Global Bucket system. Your watering set up is so simple to do I will have to add it to my buckets this winter.  2 things I might change: 1 I would drill the water overflow holes in all the buckets to allow more air flow as well as easier drainage after a rain event.  Where I live we can get a few inches of rain in a day and the bucket I forgot to drill one was flooded out and ruined.  2 I would still probably use mulch.  I used to never mulch and now I would never do anything without it.  Helps keep the soil cool, stop mold spores from bouncing up.  Prevent weed seeds from blowing in.  I had a tremendous problem with mulberry drop getting in this year.

  6. Hi, thank you for sharing the idea. Can that cloth really wick water up to the plants on top  or you water manually  from the top of the bucket?  What kind of material is it? I have tried it and the challenge is that water doesnt move to the top and plants dry out.

  7. I noticed that too! I Hope LSDprepper Answer your question/observation. Has to water weekly from the top to release the nutrients??

  8. I have never understood how these are fundamentally different from growing in a pot that has no drain at the bottom.  Just don't let the water get very high inside the bucket and let the soil or mix "wicker".

  9. Thank you for the well presented information. I have found it particularly useful as water is a precious commodity. I can't wait to find my buckets – free would be great.

  10. This video is by far the best I have seen on this subject. Now my 3rd grader brain finally grasped how it all works. Thank you so much for your wonderful effort here.

  11. To me this is counter productive.  If you going to use a wicking system why water from the top.  The Idea is draw water from beneath to the roots.  If you are going to water from the top no need to have the wicking pot just drill holes in  "one" bucket for drainage.

  12. You've inspired me to give this a try.  Since I'll be using whatever free buckets I can find, which will likely be of different sizes, I wanted to confirm a couple of things;
    1) It looks like the overflow/drain hole in the outer bucket should be immediately below the bottom of the inner bucket, correct?
    2) I assume the water supply tube should enter as low as possible, correct?
    3) Lastly, do you recommend placing some sort or porous material such as paper or a thin screen at the bottom of the inner bucket so that soil won't enter the water reservoir?  I did notice you said pack the wicking basket with soil, but how will the soil not continue onto the bottom of the bucket?

    Thanks for the great vid!

  13. @LDSPrepper Do you ever lose any soil through the netting pot into the water?  I'm asking to know if that's sufficient or do I need a mesh screen to line it?

  14. Beautiful presentation and simplified system…GREAT JOB……I have ONE suggestion for me I would use a Garden fabric and cut a cirle alot larger than the opening of the bucket and place it down and push into the little basket and you can secure it with tiny zip ties…thru the basket…so that there is room in the basket for soil….and then spread the remaining fabric around the bucket to cover the drip holes that were drilled… Then place the mix or soil you chose and continue to fill the bucket. This assures me that my bottom bucket will not get alot of mix or anything down in the water reservoir. A simple suggestion like this sure does COMPLETE this system nicely and also as someone else mentioned but was my FIRST thought after I saw the Paint….I would keep spray paint away from the inside of the bucket…period. It can easily be avoided…just use paper and masking tape inside the bucket like ONE inch down so the top Lip inside of the bucket has a nice paint ring around….on out to the outside of the bucket…then remove the paper and masking tape…and POOF….you have a wonderfully edged color to your bucket system but it only goes down ONE INCH inside of the bucket, but looks VERY NICE indeed.
I love your system very very much….Deserves a STAND UP APPLAUSE…I mean that.
What I enjoyed MOST ABOUT your system is that you KNEW what to say and you said it and explained without alot of stumbling and UM UM UM UM UM UM all thru the video which is nerve racking LOL….and You SPOKE very clearly and Was able to hear you beautifully and THAT RIGHT THERE…I THANK YOU. I do not have perfect hearing and to me this was absolutely one of the best SPOKEN videos I have listened to. I live in an aprt with large window makes this system very possible.
CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS SO MUCH buddy.

  15. You have two buckets to make one bucket garden.
You can make TWO bucket gardens instead of one.

You can use the lid of the bucket. Just saw/trim the edge so it would fit the inside of the bucket.

Then saw the hole (for the net cup) on the lid as you would have in one of the buckets.
A garden fabric can be put within the net cup so the soil won't spread inside the water reserves.

Put vertically (like stilts) some pvc pipes (or other water-resistant materials) to support the lid and the soil/potting mix to be put in.

One bucket, one lid… One bucket garden.
Two buckets, two lids… Two bucket gardens.

    ======================================

For those who do not want to interconnect the watering system because of the uneven ground surface; you can place instead a transparent tubing from the same hole as the black tubing was placed and extend the transparent tube vertically to the side of the bucket. The transparent tubing can be glued or zip-tied (if you put holes) to the side of the bucket and should extend several inches (or as long as you like) above the overflow hole.

Because the tubing is transparent, you can see the water level so you would know if the water inside needs replenishing. Water can be funneled through the transparent tubing until water level reaches the overflow hole.

So the transparent tubing is both a water-level indicator, and a water-inlet for the bucket garden.

  16. Noticed that rubber grommets cost less than the neoprene. Can rubber grommets be used instead?

The best video ever for watering system

  18. What are the measurement for installing the float?
How many inches from the bottom of the bucket?
What is the size of the hole?
Is the 7/8" hole for the drip hose drilled at the center of 1 1/4 from the bottom or is the edge of the hole at 1 1/4"?

  19. I'm working on mine right now. How high would you want the float in the pail? Isn't that what determines the water level under the plants? If the float valve was higher than your over flow holes in the planter buckets, wouldn't that cause the water to run continuously?

  20. at first i thought thats stupid but then as i watched it all , im thinking" hmm i see how this could work with what i have"!!! thanks for sharing matey!

  21. so you don't need to water it from the top at all? Just allow the hose fill each bucket up?

  22. I don't use a float. I let the buckets self level by sphyoning tubes. All my reservoirs transfer water with rope wicks which give me 5 gallon reservoirs that are controlled by one bucket at the end.

  23. Man alive this is cool…now I know this video is old but dang…. anyways…my 1 question would be how does the wrap keep it cooler during the summer??
    Wouldn't it attract more heat??
    Just wondering

  24. One of the better systems … simply explained … and looks simple to make. Thanks for sharing. Namaste Jay
