  1. You can mix garden soil and mix 50)50 with potting soil or peat moss and use in your container. Some people also add compost as well. This works well because the clay in the garden soil will hold more water than just potting soil. Less watering.
You can also use triple mix, but it will need to be topped up more regularly because it has more organic matter.

  2. I buy miracle grow in ground soil for lowes $2 sale. Then amend 1/3 soil with 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 compost manure for my 5gal buckets. Works fabulous and very cost saving. Now I'm doing my own compost for next year.

  3. Thanks, Robbie. I bought a bunch of garden soil last fall because I didn't know better. This spring, I had compost brought in. I'm mixing the compost, garden soil and Perlite for my raised beds. I also added leaves and sticks to the botton of my tall bed to attract worms as you suggested. I appreciate your help.

  4. Thank you for clarifying what to use. I accidentally purchased garden soil but I didn't want to lug it back so I bought potting soil and mixed the two together…so far so good. Your little dog is absolutely adorable.

  5. i adore your little yorkie!! And am following your ideas Having fun and hoping i get some produce

  6. I m straightened out on the potting mix. . Kitty and you Explained it good. i will be picking some Potting soil tomorrow. i did pick up Garden soil before by mistake. We will be picking up some Collard also. for my containers. Thanks for your video. Happy Mothers day for Sunday .Robbie. Nora.

  7. Thank you! Great timing- I was just about to make the garden soil mistake

  8. The Aldi potting soil was nicer than I expected for the price. When I went back for more the price had dropped to $3.99 a bag. 👩‍🌾 Color me happy. I still need 2 or 3 more bags to finish up my milk crates. I'm using different soil mixes in different types of containers and adjusting to plant moisture needs. And I'm taking notes so I'll know what I put where! EDITED TO ADD: I can't believe this. After watching your video I checked and that marked down potting soil is actually garden soil. 😳 what a doofus I am. They only ever had one pallet so I just assumed it was the same. Oh well, I can make it work. Some plants like a more "basic" soil. I can make it work. Keep your eyes open my friends.

  9. Thank you. This is very good information. This must be one of the reason my past container garden have flunked. But learning and still going. Your videos really are giving me hope there is light and i will eat what i grow.

  10. I'm not sure what I bought and used in my pots I planted recently but it's kinda chunky.? I'm afraid the plants are going to die and they are so important bc a couple are from my bf grandfather's yard that passed away. And another, my daughter gave me a couple years ago when I was sick. Any suggestions? I'm so afraid if I replant I'll put them into shock. Thank you so much for any help!

  11. I bought yesterday a bag of Peat Moss and cow manure. Now I am looking for some Perlite not from Miracle Grow. I figured it would be cheaper then potting soil.
Edit: I found some Perlite bought 2 bags but they are small bags. I hope I won't have to use much.

  12. Thanks Robbie…I bought garden soil and put it as the top layer in my totes…first time gardener here…I haven't planted in them yet….now i know to go ahead and mix it down into the leaf and sticks and kitchen scraps and put potting soil on top, right? Thank you🙂

  13. Happy mother's day to all moms out there! I've learned so much from all your comments! Thank you everyone 🙂🙂🙂

  14. I just want to say thank you and I am happy to have stumbled upon your channel it’s like visiting a good friend. This is my third year learning different ways to grow and harvest. Sending love from Ontario ChinaDa aka Canada . 😄🤷🏻‍♀️

  15. Thanks Robbie!
That explains a lot! Nobody puts out the great information like you. I appreciate you and what an adorable little doggie.

  16. I wish I’d have known this earlier😕, before I bought a bunch and filled up my containers. Luckily I haven’t planted stuff yet so I can try to correct it. Thank you for this video!

  17. This has to do with you sprouting garlic in that wicking bottle. This was the first time of MANY attempts that I got 5 yes 5 to start roots and viable sprouts. Planted them today and have my fingers crossed. Thanks. I’ve been doing container gardening for years but have branched out with double potting. Love how you’ve straightened out your plots of gardens.

  18. Robbie
Do you have a recipe for making your own potting soil or potting mix. I live in Los Angeles area, potting mix and soil is so expensive. Love your videos.

  19. 💖💖💖Hi, what is the difference between potting soil and raised bed mix? That's the one that confuses me. I have smaller sized raised beds so is the size of your raised bed is what determines which one? 💖💖💖

  20. I am a rebel. I buy garden soil because it is cheaper, but I add a lot of (free) amendments to make it better. So I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't know what they are doing.

  21. I am doing container gardening now as my back can't take bending over to tend the garden any more. Because of prices being higher I did a 50/50 mix of potting mix and garden soil. I did add my own Trifecta fertilizer though plus and doing fish emulsion suppliment. I hope it does ok. I mixed it all with my soil from containers from last year and did a big old mixing project on tarps. – I need some more so this time I will get only potting mix/soil and let it be kind of an experiment to see if the straight potting mix/soil does better than the garden soild/potting soil mix. Wish me luck!! 😁😁

  22. @Scutter Martin From my experience potting soil works best for starting seeds because it's lighter than garden soil so don't have to struggle to reach the surface. I can relate to the back pain issue!

  23. Hi Robbie. I just got a notice from the HOA says I need to get rid of all the containers😣 how stupid they are. Hope can find some information here to persuade the HOA.

  24. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS INFORMATION. Now I know why my seeds didn’t do so well. I was using garden soil!!

  25. I learned halfway thru last year the 2-2-1 "recipe" 2 parts peat moss( supercheap), 2 parts compost( super cheap or free) and 1 part pearlite, inexpensive if you look around! My town offers free compost, so 12.99 for the huge compressed block of peat at lowes, and 8.98 for 2 8qt bags of pearlite to my door from Amazon for 8 bucks… I can't begin to tell you all how many totes I'm filling for less than $20 maybe 50 if I had to buy compost… it's easily 300.00 of bagged soil, possibly 500! Depending on where you live! In my totes thst get the heavy feeders I toss in a cap full of osmocote slown release fertilizer… I'm not able to make the compost tea you do at the magnitude you do so this works for me! I love how you explain to everyone allllllll the time! I also bed low cost garden soil would mix really well with the compressed peat cubes for a low cost solution too

  26. Say u already filled ALOT buckets and totes with garden soil. How do I make them grow ?

  27. Hello, Mrs. Bobby can I use wood, leaves, and cardboard to fill grow bags to help filling containers without so much dirt? Love your videos I recently bought 18gallon containers that I will be using also. Thank you for your help great job !!! 👍
