The first decent frost should be here in just a couple of days, so it’s time to try to get the garden all wrapped up. We’ll start today by laying down cardboard on all the beds. Then, we’ll partially deconstruct the goat house, and move it out of the way so we can harvest all the goodness the goats created for us over the last year and a half. All that will be applied to the bed, and we’ll continue to layer on more and more organic matter this fall, and even into next year. Can’t wait to see what happens over the next few years!
I heard in a video that you made green tomato canned curry but I couldn’t find the video. Does anyone know where I could find that?
Yes I will definitely be sticking around! I kid your content. Can’t wait to see what else you have in store!🤗
Without enough cardboard I would rake the heck out of your leaves and get on Nextdoor and ask for more leaves. do the bottom layer leaves you have crushed with the mower and the top layer not crushed; NO GRASS CLIPPINGS unless you hot compost them first.
I am a new subscriber. I love your channel. I don't have a homestead but I can still use your ideas in my home and my yard. Thanks
But it’s not good bye to the garden; it’s a year of rest! Well, you won’t be resting but your garden will 😉
Can’t wait to see the new content. Best Wishes
Chicken videos please❤
Where did the goats go? How are the piggies? Excited for the different content coming! We are PRAYING that we will be on new-to-us property next year and starting our farmstead journey. Happy Fall Y’all! 🍁
I am looking forward to your other homesteading chores/ pleasures especially the teas. I do have to say I'm a better & more adventurous canner than I used to be because of you. Thank you 😊
A Sabbath rest for the earth is just as important as the Sabbath rest made for man. ❤ May God bless you both!
How did you get rid of the creeping Charlie in your garden? I cannot seem to keep it out of my garden, no matter what I do. That and Bind Weed are the worst! I cannot seem to keep them out of my garden, no matter what. 🙁
Of course we will stick around next year. I can’t wait! I so enjoy watching and learning from you both! ❤
Re: the weed seeds, I have all my composting bins (a large 4-bin system) set up so that my chickens work in it and eat up all the weed seeds etc. they also get very hot. I collect lots of leaves and grass in the fall and keep piles of those near the bins to add when I need to. It works really really well and whenever I see people with chickens who are NOT doing this I wish they understood what an opportunity they’re missing!!
Not sure if you watch Perma pasture farms but they make there own compost. Awesome videos. Good time for you to come up with a cookbook 😁😁
My garden keeps my clinical depression at bay. Without my garden I'd be a nut case and my family would probably move me to a real farm (not a funny farm LOL). I hope you have an abundance of peace this year. God bless you and Todd. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Before you plant flowers around the entire garden, remember where the tractor bucket drops your mulch, etc., over the fence. How close can the tractor get with a flower bed there? Just a thought.
Azomite, bloodmeal and bonemeal and composted manure with compost from our city are all the amendments I use.
Since you are
Letting the garden rest for a year you could use the clean out from the chickens It has to sit for a year before it’s ready anyway.
Hi Rachel & Todd. It is time for the garden to take a well deserved rest. And wood love to see your flowers 🌺🌹 next year. Rachel, if you have stuff you use for cooking like egg shells orange peels. Use them in the garden to feed the soil. God BlessRachel for all you do. And keep up the amazing work. Todd, please take care of your back. Because I am. My back has been hurting me to. God Bless the two of you again. Stay healthy. Love you guy's. Mari'a. 👍👍👍👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😀😀😀🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌹🌹🌹🌹💐💐💐💐💐💐
I’m using pots for now i keep using the same dirt mixing compost in we are doing raised beds next year since I’m having to hire someone to do it I’m putting plants for that in the pots for that since I’m doing a mix of ornamental flowers and food
Thanks for sharing Todd & Rachel I know you are going to Miss your Garden for a year 10-10-2022♥️
Todd, glad your back is feeling better. I have a huge concern (for myself) that while watching your video, I thought I could smell barn compost! 🤣🤣🤣 I canned my greens yesterday and thought of you Rachael as I used broccolini leaves, cabbage leaves, beet greens and malabar spinnach. Yep, I bought myself some malabar spinnach seed right after watching your harvest video of it. They turned out amazing and I ended up with 13 quarts. ( I always cook mine down in a smoked pork bone pot liquor, which makes everything taste great) Take care!
What happened to the pigs?
Just love you guys
We have a few acres of usually corn or soy beans. We have rested out land also in 7 year intervals as the Bible talks about. The lord will bless 😍
I'm so sorry that you hurt your back. That's miserable for you. Don't push yourself too soon. A little over a week ago I fell off a ladder in my orchard and fell horizontally landing first on my tailbone. I'm still sore. It's getting better but apparently I'm on a slow track for healing.
Totally new here …. just wanted to say I enjoyed watching you two 🥰. Looking forward to watching more of your videos (old and new) and learning about creating our homestead.
I can’t wait to see your garden after a year off! ❤
So glad that you will have content for next year, looking forward to what are you planned!
Will you also be taking a break from preserving produce from local farmers you purchase from?
What happened to the goats?
I agree resting a garden is good so you can amend soil and be able to add extra nutrients to the garden area and plus be able to get some other things done.
Are you guys going to garden in your green stalks since you won’t have your garden in use?
You seem so sad. I'm feeling sad for you. I'll have to go back to see what I have missed. Mike and Lacy Dickson from the fit farmer did a year off for biblical reasons this year. I gave my garden many years break for my health reasons :/ I really tried to start a garden this year but my planS kept kinda falling over each other with still having major health issues which I am sick to death of as well as life issues that keep coming up. So my property has not had the love it deserves and that I want to give it.
Granny always rotated the gardens, she had 3! I remember well her saying just let that one go fallow. Grandpa would turn the earth with the plow the Fall before she grew in the "new" old garden on the next Spring! I forgot to ad the hogs were always in the fallow garden the last Fall she used it. So it was almost a 18 month process. It always was a productive garden with bountiful harvests.
What did you do with the goats? I may have missed on another video. I’m excited to see more in the kitchen next year, maybe more canning ideas. 😊
When you said, "Well, this is goodbye to the garden." I felt strength and sadness at the same time.
where did the goats go? i know you loved them as pets
I am just learning more about this…..resting your garden. That is what I planned on doing this year and did not. And I feel like I should have stuck to my plan. I can tell my garden area is depleted. We did build wood "boxes" around my planting areas. So this fall I am piling mine up with organic matter as well. Next year however no garden. We are traveling instead. I am on the fence however about covering it with like silage tarp versus cardboard. What was your thought process on just leaving the cardboard down versus covering it with organic matter and then silage tarp? Or did you even consider that? I am on the fence. I am not going to be around so I am worried weeds will take over. If you get a minute in a future video, can you touch on this subject??? Thanks for all you guys content. We recently visited Michigan and I thought of you guys !!!
Did you can double this year in preparation for no garden next year?
Ok good… I won’t miss you if you’re still gonna be here but what a bittersweet time ❤
Looking forward to learning more with you! Hope you both get some much needed rest as well. God bless you both.
This will be great for me prepping and developing my new garden space. I am slowly prepping my beds for spring. I didn’t want to plant anything yet in the beds as from experience, the soil isn’t ready and I would just be frustrated with my garden. “Rome wasn’t built in a day” as they say 😊 so I look forward to learning from you guys this coming years
