For centuries, designers of Japanese gardens have placed special emphasis on boulders for their permanency.
Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park’s Japanese Garden Designer Hoichi Kurisu visited a West Michigan rock quarry and selected the individual boulders based on qualities necessary for a Japanese garden: size, weathered appearance, interesting shapes and subdued coloring.
Kurisu and his team used these boulders to commemorate the foundational beginning of The Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Visit MeijerGardens.org or Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park’s Facebook for updates on the new garden until its completion in 2015.
