Houseplants are all the rage. But as Americans buy more plants, and producers scale up to meet demand, more plants are dying. About 40% of plants perish in the supply chain, and another 35% die in customers’ homes. So what are plant producers and influencers doing about it? We went to one of America’s largest plant farms to find out.

Why We Kill So Many Houseplants, But Spend Billions On Them Anyway | Big Business

  1. Taking care of plants is skill unfortunately you have to lose a few to learn what you did wrong and how to care for them properly. No matter how much you read up about them it’s not the same as looking after one.

  2. I always propagate my plants and give them away to all neighbors who actually take care of them. I am moving away from ornamental plants to cultivate herbs and fruits.

  3. I buy clearance plants alot to revive them. I also keep my old plastic nursery pots. Even once I repot the plant, I can still use the nursery pot. I buy plants I know I can keep alive as well. I do not buy plants I do not have the conditions for. I pass along cuttings too friends and family. I'm always devastated when I lose a plant. It doesn't happen very often, but it does happen occasionally. Like yesterday, I was gone a for a week I made sure to water before I left. However, apparently two plants needed more water during that week. Research the plants you bring into your home.

  4. I killed about 30% of my plants. The light are the most important. And water just right also very important. Some plants doesn't matter what you do it will die .prayer plants are the most fussy. Most will not survive.

  5. The other part here is that those plants are grown in such specific environments that once they move to a house with the environment changing they stand little to no chance of surviving

  6. I'm pretty good at keeping my house plants alive, likely due to my experience with 'water-plants', also growing my own fruits and vegs when i was a kid….
my cat on the other hand, has a terrible track record.

  7. I try to get sicker plants to try and make them grow. I've had my fair share of failures, but in a few years I've learned so much about each of them. I never took a bottany course, nor was I good at biology. But by caring about and researching my plants I've learned way more than I ever imagined. One of my firsts Orchids, Torte, now has its first keiki and has been in my home for three years now. She's survived through a water softner fail, pest issues, and severe root rot and she's going strong!

  8. Keep buying plants you love different sorts eventually you will find those that you can keep long term
    Don’t sweat it

  9. I doubt consumers killed 70% since the majority of the plants are never bought, if anything, retail stores kill the biggest amount due to lack of proper care, just check out how much home depot throws away, many retail stores throws away the plants when they don't look the best anymore. Very weird concept, but it seems plants have to also make it/qualify for clearance shelves in big box stores, the majority are tossed, not everything is going to clearance or the store would be losing money.

  10. Out of 14 plants 100% of them are clippings from someone else, I never paid for plants. So far I only killed 1 plant the rest seem to be doing good. I do have a little repotting to do!

  11. Watching this video makes me feel very proud of myself as I've had my plants for 6-7 years and I've grown them into trees and have not lost a single plant under my care ❤️

  12. "Do you really need the plant" — says the lady who has more plants than visible wall space in her kitchen.

  13. Why do people care if the plant dies? Its not conscious and thr business gets their money. If they owner doesn't want the plant enough to take proper care for it than its up to them

  14. Amongst the vast variety of social influencers they picked Summer, huh

Kind of clearance from news people

  15. That would be why I made a greenhouse. I water only if we have no rain in two days. It’s the Florida cold I have to worry about.

  16. Here in Australia, a lot of the house plants we have are considered weeds. Especially the Syngonium (Arrow Head), Dracaena trifasciata (Snake Plants) and Monstera deliciosa (Swiss cheese plant).

  17. I have killed countless Alocasia plants. The only one i have right now that still live is Alocasia Amazonica. However, ! Calathea seems to really thrive at my place. They grow very bushy & big leaves. 😄.

  18. PictureThis app is something that all plant owners should be using to help care for all their green friends 💚

  19. I’m a Gardner and love my plants 🪴
But the same people who call people plant murderer, will call someone who gets an abortion brave and independent.
