Hori Hori Knife:
A cross between a knife and a trowel, this tool is useful for many tasks such as dividing perennials or planting. Traditionally used in Japan to collect specimens for bonsai (hori means “digging”), the knife has a rust-resistant steel blade that is dished, with a serrated edge on one side and a sharpened edge on the other.
About 12″ overall, it has a hardwood handle and comes with a belt sheath.
Made in Japan.
San-Kaku Hoes:
While these may look like something you’d carry into battle, they are truly effective hoes, and real workhorses in the garden. Popular in Japan for weeding and trenching, they have hardened stainless-steel spear points to break up soil and sever roots, and sharpened edges for slicing through soil to remove shallow-rooted weeds.
The short-handled version, 18″ long overall with a 5-1/2″ long, 3-3/4″ wide head, is ideal for working on your knees, in raised beds, or in confined spaces. Designed for use in a standing position, the long-handled hoe is 57-1/2″ long overall, with a 7-1/2″ long, 4-1/2″ wide head (minor assembly required; hardware and hex key included).
Each has a comfortable, oval handle. Well made in Japan. For the curious, san-kaku is Japanese for triangle.
Japanese Knife-Making Kits:
With one of these kits, a few tools and a modest investment in time, you can create a custom-made knife to last a lifetime.
You can carve the handle to suit your grip, and even personalize it with incised or burned designs. We offer kits in two styles, each made in Japan with a carbon-steel blade that comes honed, ready for use.
Each also includes unfinished beech handle scales that are CNC-machined to a well-defined outline that you can sculpt to the final shape.
The full-tang carving knife has a 1-3/4″ fixed blade. The folding knife has a 3-3/4″ blade with a thumb rest that prevents accidental closure and provides a bearing surface for heavy cuts.
Each kit includes Chicago bolts (brass for the carving knife; stainless steel for the folding knife) to affix the handle scales.
In case of mishaps when shaping or mounting the handle, we offer replacement scales for each kit. Supplied with step-by-step instructions, these kits make outstanding gifts, engaging projects and superb knives.
Stainless-Steel Mattocks:
These high-quality, Japanese-made mattocks are surprisingly lightweight and well balanced for comfortable one-handed use.
The cultivator mattock has a 4″ long, four-tine cultivator end for digging and clearing debris, and a mattock end (3″ long with a 2-3/4″ wide blade) for chopping small roots and trenching. The pick mattock has a 3″ pick end for breaking up compacted soil, and a 3″ long by 2-1/2″ wide mattock end.
Each has a tough, rust-resistant stainless-steel head, a 14″ long Japanese white oak handle with a rubber grip, and an exposed wedge that can be tapped to tighten the handle if required.
Available individually or as a set, these are good tools for smaller gardens.
