This is just a quick record of my Landscape Lighting idea I have for the backyard. I really love my new fence, and I believe adding a small stone boarder wall with landscape lighting will add to the tranquility of the backyard.
I say go dwarf tree. And another thing is since you are in Texas get some inexpensive lavender seeds drought tolerant for pollination purpose it will make a nice border I think
Have you heard of LDSPrepper on YouTube? He has given me some great ideas for growing gardens, fruit trees, etc and I think he use to live in Texas. He grew year around with his back yard grow box's. Check him out, inspired me for sure.
What about for privacy and what ideas do you have? Please don't use pine trees all around and forget about them, meaning just let them grow up 30' like my neighbor. He never gets to enjoy beautiful sunsets like I do. Allowing vegetation to overgrow is the wisdom of a fool and very disrespectful toward your neighbors.
I'm considering the same concept around my wooden fence in my backyard. I'm not looking to grow anything in the edge area at all. Is the cedar mulch the best recommendation ?

FIG Tree
what color stain did you use on your fence?
Do you just add mulch over the grass or do you remove the grass first then add the mulch?
