Hello! My name is Bethany and I grow things in my rooftop container garden in Chicago, zone 6a.
In today’s video, I’ll go over my plan for next year’s garden.

Enorme jardin
It’s hard to believe it’s almost over again. I can’t wait to see how the other deck turns out next year, but I’m sure it will be amazing. I have Butterfly Weed that I planted in the ground a few years ago that has orange bloom. I don’t know if it’s the same as Milk Weed or not. It is a perennial that comes back every year and is super easy to grow. I might try daylilies in pots next year.
I think for the area where the container will be in the shade & you want something climbing (front deck) a clematis would be perfect! They like their roots cooler & shaded.. the rest of the plant can reach for the ☀️ the view of the cathedral on your back deck is beautiful! Great plans for next year, I’m looking forward to coming along 😆🦋☘️🌷
I like your ideas almost specially about the butterfly garden. Have you ever thought of a purple hyacinth beam to go over the top of your flower cart? Have you thought about putting in a hummingbird garden? How about some feeders your setting area? It is fun to watch them come to the feeders
Question: will you still be able to overwinter your dahlias in the pots? Will they be heavier to move (I think you were most successful storing them in the garage)? Also, I wonder if clematis would work on that wall where the pots are in shade, but up higher you get sun? They like moist shaded feet, but need full sun to bloom. I prefer type 3, because they die all the way back to the ground in winter, so you don't have to worry so much about winter hurting buds on existing wood. I have bought gomphrena seed for the first time, after loving yours this year 🙂
I've had a hummingbird fly in front of my face twice and just kind of hover there like it's staring at me and then zip off! I don't know how anyone films them! I love that you're making a mini pollinator meadow. I watched a few good shows on pollinators and became addicted to attracting them which is why my yard this year is covered in echinacea. I grew milkweed and two monarch chrysalis things appeared then disappeared that I regret not putting a cover on 😞 my perspective of bugs in general is completely different than before I started gardening. I love watching them.
Also I hope your hydrangeas do well. That looks like a good spot 👍
Have you thought about clematis? They love shaded roots and sun on their tops. There are some very beautiful varieties.
Dahlias in pots are tricky. Will be following closely they did not work for me this year.
